I know wideband is better but...... My question is, what is the major difference between the two? I mean, can I run a narrowband with nitrous, and still have an accurate AFR reading? OR is the narrowband not trusted with power adders?

Stock O2's are narrowband sensors. No one will tell you that you can't run spray without a wideband, but its a hugely helpful thing to have and a good insurance policy if you know what the readings mean and how to react to them. A narrowband is limited in its range that it can sense about 14-15 to 1 afr where as a wideband is accurate in readding about 10-18 to 1 afr. That is iirc. Basically don't waste ur money on an aftermarket narrow band and best thing to do if your going FI is get a WB.
Narrowband-narrow range +/- 1 or 2 points around 14.7. Widebands can range from 8-18 usually.
Cool, thank you man. That helps out alot. Thanks again.
Now that Christmas has come and went, I can start saving for my truck. Just kinda getting an idea on what to get. I hate buying stuff that come to find out was a waste of money. Thats the reason I like this site. Cornucopia of great info, and great people to give.
There are better ways to monitor your AFR when running nitrous and most all say the best way is by reading your spark plug electrode heat reading after a WOT run on the spray. Set the mixture rich to start with and work your way up. Monitor your bottle pressure, too. Low pressure at the bottle will make you run rich and too high of pressure will cause a lean condition.
Thing is, you need to know how to read plugs, and to get the best reading youre suppose to cut the motor after your run and coast to the return lane pull a plug and check it, others say you can drive it back to the pits, but youre still dealing with a hot ass motor unless you wait for it to cool down, now if you wanna do it that way i would still recommed the WB so you can make sure that youre not about to explode gooin down the track. Obviously i dont practice what i preach. I cant read a plug to save.my life
I am not going to lie man, I don't know how to read a plug. I have old school friends that ask, whats the plug look like. I reply like a spark plug. I know if it has oil on the electrode strap, thats a bad thing  I had a dirt bike that did that often. I little tan is good, but and white with the strap melted is bad also. Thats about is for my plug reading. I would probably make a better palm reader. So I will just stick with the WB. Thank you everyone for your in put. And G, thats the way we have to get a reading on my dads drag bike. Kill it at the big end. Its a lot easier on a bike, because we tow it back to the pits. And those who care, this is my dads drag bike. http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/...4/ee955664.jpg http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/...4/50809368.jpg
Sweet
Thank you sir. My KZ isn't as fast or does it look as good. But it's fun to ride :lol;
reading plugs helps, but i dont see it as the only way. you need to monitor it live as well. but this guy hit it on the head with bottle pressure. people most of the time dont realize how important it is. some try to run too high of a pressure or too low. if you are around 1000psi during a run and it is rich or lean, adjust with jets not pressure!!
it looks like you have gotten plenty of people telling you already about a wideband so im sure you know by now thats the way to go
You mean greg knew what he was talking about....i call bs
A wideband is only a useful tool if you know how to read it as well
Plugs are not the only way to tune nitrous, but is a far better way than using a wideband. Some people tune by reading plugs, some tune by egt's, some tune just by logging vacuum and watching mph on the time slip, some will just use the wideband. Lots of ways to skin that cat.
How much nitrous are you planning on spraying? If you're pretty much stock, just going up to a 150shot or so using the stock fuel system, just throw some plugs in there, pull the correct timing and throw the jet in it. Remember, rich is NEVER safe and too much timing will ruin your day in a heartbeat. Put a rich condition with a too much timing condition and you'll end up with an unhappy engine. You would have to be EXTREMELY lean to hurt a motor, and you can't hurt one by running low timing.
Do some searching around the net and see what you come up with as far as jetting. The jetting really won't change much from vehicle to vehicle since the fuel pressure is the same on all these ls1's. Timing will definitely vary though depending on cylinder heads, combustion chamber, compression ratio, etc etc..
Nothing wrong with running 1000psi bottle pressure, but just realize you will experience a greater drop in pressure throughout your run. We try to run ours between 900-950psi to keep from having such a drastic loss. Try not to ever let it get below 900psi and you'll be good
I say a wideband isn't needed because there is no set AFR that a nitrous motor should run at. They're all different. A plug will tell you more about a run than a wideband.
For example, last time my truck was on the dyno, we made a pull that registered 12.8:1 on the wideband. Pulled the plugs and they said it was still fat. Pulled some more fuel out of it, changed plugs and made another pull. It registered 13.5:1 on the wideband and picked up around 15hp.
Thank you Danny, I still have a lot to learn about EVERYTHING. It's an all stock 5.3, and yes it would be a 150 shot is all. For now . I do need to get HP tuners to sometime. Cause I'll have to have Glenn tune it for the nitrous. And wont always want to drive around like that. I hope to some day get another truck that will be my toy. But for now I have to keep it mild on this truck. I still have to get to work. And it is way to cold to be riding to KZ.
The only experience I have ever had with nitrous is when I used to run around with the Wilson's. That blue Nova he has was a nitrous sucking hog man. My old car ran mid 12's all motor, and after riding in his car feeling that 150 hit for the first time was just awesome.
Danny, did you ever know Drew Million? He bought Dave Thomas's old black mustang. Drew Took me for a ride in that when he had a blow and a 50 shot running 9.90s at the time, That was just badass man. Fastest thing I have ever been in.
