I am sure there are lots of experienced hands here that can tell me what a good performance cam with decent fuel mileage I could put in my '95 fathers C1500 silverado//5.7L. engine is stock with an auto tranny......13 mpg is about all I can squeeze out of it and it doesnt have many miles on it. Use it for general use but sure could use a little more power. Looking for a cam that doesnt require changes to the rest of the valve train. Thanks!!!!

this is mostly a ls based truck forum, i know alot of ppl over at fullsizechevy.com could answer you in minutes might try over there.
or you could just do a ls swap then put a ls6 cam in there lol
an Edelbrock performer or preformer rpm package would do wonders. You would also have to get a new chip burned for it though.
Just swap the motor to a 5.3 more potential, and mpg.
You're going to have to swap other parts of the valvetrain. No matter what.
Leave it alone or LS swap...
would like to do the LS swap, this motor only has 29K orig. miles on it though....

Yeah I vote 5.3L swap..you will be closer to 20 mpgs and have more hp even with a stock LS 5.3L with headers and basic bolt-ons. I went from a 318 to a 440 big block to a LS1 5.7L before I found the light!!! LOL
My 5.7L LS1 has 315 rwhp, runs 13.4 @ 96 and gets 18.8 highway mpgs. it only makes sense to swap
TBI engines were really gutted as far as performance in my opinion. You have dish pistons, heads that had a swirl intake port, and a really small cam with less than 200 degrees duration. They were pretty dependable I guess though and still are. If you were going to do anything you might well start from stratch. A cam alone is not going to do much.
It's a nice truck...my father ordered it brand new in '95 after a tree fell on his '94 that had only 1200 miles on it...he's 92 yrs old now and doesn't drive it a lot except when he goes fishin....I know he would love the LS but I think he would get into trouble...he's always had a lead foot....not sure what it's worth but he keeps it spotless.......Quote:
