Twin turbs Question.

Hiya guys, amidst the search for a magnacharger that was affordable, I've concluded that it would be cheap and more efficient to go with a turbocharged setup..That being said here is the master plan, (since i am not and evil villain, i can reveal it to you upfront without a monologue.)

I'm going to retain my ebay LTs, move the fuel tank to the back behind the axle, and run twin .63 AR t4 turbos on the collectors. They are internally wastegated and that makes me happy... anyways, then i plan on running a set of pipes out over the axle and 90 them behind the rear wheels like my current setup. The longtubes will be heavily wrapped with Basalt Fabric(research it, you will like) and then a mylar backed shielding to cover that. Intake tubing isn't terribly difficult to fab, so i'll leave that out. I'm going to run this with a water to air intercooler.

so yeah, thats the plan, i'm gonna start with the 4.8L with 1721 cam and 5 psi, then will switch to the 370ci with a LS6 cam and and ls3 heads with l92 intake.




am i cray, or right on the money. 600hp is my limit.

Ok then, well basically i was wondering if 2.4L litres worth of exhaust through a 2.5'' collector was going to be enough to get proper acceleration of the turbine. I don't want to have too many problems. These turbochargers are small but they claim to support up to 300 hp easily. And i figured with two of them 600 hp at the flywheel wasn't a longshot. I'm only planning on running 5 psi to keep from overworking my stock internals. If this is too modest, i don't really care, i have to drive this thing to work. I'm looking for mild performance and reliability.

Thanks Mitch. I have a TIG welder by the way, so fabbing this all up will be fairly simple for me. Another thing i'm going to try is to build and exhaust system out of spun carbon filament tubes with ceramic powder coating to act as a binder. Unfortunately they haven't developed a high temp resin that can take the abuse and heat of an exhaust system. I'm just hoping I can get the powder suspended in a liquid that will set up fairly sound so the tubes don't collapse during the heat curing process. If it works i'll have a 2k dg tube that will be lighter than aluminum tubing. This may be the longshot. But anyways, i could then move on to building an exhaust housing for a turbocharger that would weigh 1/10th of cast iron with an equal expansion rated and better insulating properties. then its on to a ceramic turbine and shaft to keep them from melting. But thats far down the road.

ya right.... we havent even made it to 800hp yet!

The Nice thing will be to simply swap engines and ECMs and not have to do any mods down the road.

but yet a few years ago a 5.3 with twins on it did make over 800 rwhp

They're little turbos though. at about 15 psi i might make 700ish. At which point the factory head bolt will probably stretch and the heads will take off like rockets. And i'm not really looking to lift heads. I figure low boost and high compression will give me great fuel mileage and plenty of power for a turbocharged engine. If it works out, I'll build a second kit to match and somebody else with a rear fuel cell can switch over to this system fairly easily.

The oiling system is one element that will take some work. I don't want to put 30k on a kit only to have an electric oil pump malfunction and burn up both turbochargers. But then again, i don't like the idea of mixing the turbo-oil with engine-oil. So i may look into a separate oil system that can be driven by the engine. I'll have to be able to regulate the pressure, and it will need a big oil cooler as well as a good filter system. So maybe a single stage belt driven pump for a dry sump system will be the way to go.

Moroso PN 226000. External Wet sump oil pump with accessory drive kit. I'll probably have to build my own pulley for the ls engine accessories, but I think this well be the solution. I would dearly like to find a cheaper alternative though.

I'm pretty sure Mitch was north of 25 before he took out a head gasket, with stock parts. ARP head bolts are around $110. Just a thought.

Old power steering pump FTW. I think a regulator downstream from a power steering pump with at least one oil cooler and filter will make a good oil system.
If i can find a pump with the shaft extending out of the back of it, I could attach another pump to the back of it so they would run on a common shaft.

Ok then, I have located a powersteering pump to use as an oil pump, now i need to find a spare 4.8/5.3/6.0 powersteering pump to gut out, build a shaft, bore a hole through the back of the pump housing, counterbore it, install a high pressure seal and drill a bolt pattern to attach the second pump. then i just need to install it and plumb the system and test it.

Anybody need an auxiliary oil pump for say, a turbocharger or something? I got to work on a prototype today and got something that will definitely feed a turbocharger. and it installs with hardly any mods. Just plumbing.

yeah, i kinda hit a wall on that, the pump and everything worked out ok, but the power steering pump on genIII trucks backs right up to the head and the deck. You would have to run an old style accessory kit with the p/s pump mounted out away from the engine. Otherwise there is no room.

it sucks, but not
