5.3 questions.

OK, from my previous post it was said the 99s have different cams/tuning than the later trucks and the 02s are best in the tuning of the 99-02. WOuld it be best to steer clear of the 99s? If I got a 99 what would be the best price/performance cam I can get for these trucks? How much is the nelson tuning? I plan to start out with bolt-ons possibly :nx: and eventually get the STS turbo setup. Just wondering if I should go older (99) and get the truck ccheaper so i can start the moidding earlier hehehe.

I have a 99 and do have some problems with false knock, the PCM is the problem with the knock. If this next tune doesnt take care of some of the pinging Allen is switching to a 02 PCM, because we cant narrow it down to anyrthing else. Allen told me the later the year the less the problem with the false knockin, but 02 pretty much has the problem nailed. That would probably be your best year to buy but 99 is still a good choice!

My '01 is fine without False KR. :hshake: When I owned a 1999 it was very, very slow.

What about 00s?

00 are great, nuff said!

Well it can be in early '00s also. Just log it and be sure.

'00s+ have the larger cam. That's one reason they're quicker.

Also, there's LOTS of problems with early '99s too. TSB, recalls, etc. Not the best vehicle around. If you're looking to buy, IMO... get a '00+

I have a 99 and I have to say that it is very slow, but there is a lot of pinging when you use lower octane fuel. I only use 93 and I really don't have any pinging anymore. Your best bet would be to get an 00'+.

Will switching to the 02 PCM help knock out the false knock and speed the truck up a bit, I know Allen said if this retune didnt work for me thats what he is going to go for. I am only getting ping on the top end, but I can tell in some circumstances where timing is being pulled when it shouldnt.

It's a constant 8° KR, it's crappy.

Timing should be pulled anytime there is load on the motor... in the midrange espically I'd pay attention.

Ya could also desensitize the knock sensors too.

I wonder why Allen hasnt already switched me over, I knew it could be a bit faster, although the tune is a badass upgrade over stock, i know there is some balls left in that truck, especially on takeoff.

My 99 pings like a bitch. Even with the tune and 93 octane......

wtf to do? swap for a 02?

Let me edit this. MY engine is a freakin 02, and the pcm is a 99...would this cause some false knock???

It&#39;s just the PCM man, but when you had the tune did you let Allen know you had an 02, this could be the problem, I think the 02&#39;s have different cams. The 99 PCM&#39;s suck, tuning can take care of alot of problems with them, but its just the false knock problem that takes away alot of timing.

At the time of the tune, I forgot to mention that to him. My 99 engine locked up and I had it replaced with one out of an &#39;02. I never thought that might be the culprit.

are the problems always with the 99&#39;s?? and are the always same stuff??

Yes... they have many problems. TSBs out the ass.

That helps with the tuning, but I mean mechanical issues. ABS module, driveline bits, etc. My truck was a POS by 64k or so when I traded it... never abused. Leaking window seals, window reg took a crap, on and on.

I am thining the retune Allen just sent me was an 02, I cant remember if he said he was going to try it this time or not, but even with Allen&#39;s tune I was still getting ping and not a whole lot of response even after we got the tune taken care of, the high end was unbelieveable. but the low end needed work. I&#39;ll let ya know the diff by Thurs when I get it in.

I&#39;m guessing that I need to upgrade too, but what&#39;s the difference in the price between the 99 and 02 pcm? I&#39;m thinking of getting a shift kit/servo so I can safely get all of my TQ Mgmt removed as well... That should wake it&#39;s sorry ass up rite?

Yes an &#39;02 PCM w/ a tune will really help a &#39;99 in terms of performance. Sydney Moon my man. :laugh:

I&#39;m going to take mine once I get the shift kit and all installed and the tune straightened out.

I just want to run against the clock to get a time. I&#39;ve never done it before.

Well, i am still looking, hacving issues locating what i want in my area, of course I am being very picky LOL. i will keep you guys informed.
