built me a set of traction bars

Well after looking over DUMPD04's thread about his bars he had made i figured id give it a shot. I cut the brackets out of 3/16'' steel on our waterjet at school. Then ordered the tubing and the heim joints, jam nuts, and rod ends from ebay. It took me about a day or so to get it all fabbed and welded up, and let me tell you the truck feels sweet with them now! Here are some pics

Looks good. With no overload springs I bet you had a real bad time with keeping the tires on the ground.

well i had the overload spring but i took it off so it wouldnt be hitting the bars. Zero axle wrap and zero wheel hop now

I bet. :thumb: Might put you some spring clamps on there too, to make the springs stronger.

i might try that red. and honostly i wouldnt have a clue how to make a set for your lifted truck lol, kinda would have to have it in front of me, you know

the drop on the eyebolt side would just have to be larger. I could give ya measurements :)

depending on the drop, yes.

Basically I just have a extra leaf, and 5.5" spacer between axle and rearend. So either a 6" drop on the eyebolt side, or slightly longer rod would be necessary lol

The heims and all were $135 the hardware was about $30 the tubing with shipping was about $50 and the brackets were free bc we had extra metal laying around. And the heims came in a set of 8 with 4 rh and 4 lh

you have any links to the places you bought all this? i found the Heims on Ebay a while back but not sure on the hardware and where to find the steel tubing. i want to make myself a set. thanks!

i got the tubinh from http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant...=2&top_cat=197. i got 5' of the 1.25''OD x .120 wall for the bars and 2' of 1'' OD x .120 wall for the spacers. And the heims are from here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/4-LIN...item5ad05ee356. And I dont really have ready access to the waterjet considering it belongs to a university and if they catch me cutting out parts that i intend to sell then i risk getting expelled lol. But i would be more than happy to give any measurements needed.

yeah those are the same heims i was looking at as well. thanks for the links, what lenght did the tubing end up being cut to? something like 28"? if you wanna take measurements on the brackets that would be amazing. totally up to you. thanks for the help.

The tubes were cut to 27.5" but I would mock up the brackets if I were u then measure bc dumpd04's were cut to 28.5" and if I wouldn't have mocked and measured then they wouldn't have worked for me. The brackets have three holes. Looking at the front bracket as if it were long side down the top big hole is 1&1/16". The left hole is 9/16" and the right hole is 3/4". From center to center of the big hole to the other holes is 3.5" and they are on 90*. I have a 1/4" of material around each hole. The rear brackets are 2.5" wide at bottom. The hole is 3/4" in diameter. And from the bottom of the bracket to the center of the hole is 3.5". Is everything clear lol?

yeah clear as sand haha, j/k. makes sense to me, did you do the welding? whoever welded in the bungs did a great effort in cleaning them up after, looks flawless!

nice work! does the rear bolt of the front mount just rest on the top of the spring?

yes it does but i cut a sleeve for it out of the 1" tubing. And i did all the work on em. just took a bench grinder and wire brush to the ends after welding, came out better then i thought they would too lol

Damn man they turned out nice. It is awsome when you can do things like this for ourselves.. You do realize you can buy these from caltracs for about 100 more :P Again Looks nice

lol yea i know, but i saw them and figured i could do them myself and hey i saved $100 in the process lol, and i have 4 more heims to build another set if anyone wants to buy them.

thanks for the measurements i drew up some scale drawings tonight real nice, with perfect measurements, i dont have access to a waterjet but i guess theres more than 1 way to cut a piece of steel.

There sure is. Maybe a Cnc plasma cutter. Call some machine shops in ur area and see if they can do it

^ Yes, but the "bracket" pivots on the spring bolt, it is wedged between the spring eye and frame bracket, and then the spring bolt gets re installed and sandwich's the assembly together.

Heck of a deal that's what I've been trying to understand befire I made some thanks for the input guys!

They werent bad at all to build. Just need to find some one to cut the brackets. Other than that its just simple fabrication

What did you use as the "bearing" on the 1 1/16 hole? Or did you use anything?

Didn't use anything.

i need to look into getting a set of cal tracs or something i know traction's going to be a big issue soon. i like this set up wish i knew someone who would do it around here... dam small towns!
