700r4 behind LS1
Hey,
Just wondering if you guys leave the std 700r4 in when you do your ls1 conversions. Have done this conversion before but used a built t400 so just trying to work out a cheaper way. We have the 4L60E's in our gm cars over here but they dont seem to be holding up too well so what do you guys suggest?
Cheers
Brendan

I'd suggest a 4L80e or TH400 (w/ gear vendors)
-
Im in the process of using my built 700r w a 3500 stall behind my ls1, I'm hoping it holds because the swap took all of my fun money. I should be running this weekend so we will see.
-
Will the 700r4 or TH400 bolt to a Gen 3 5.3?
-
yes they will bolt up i have the 700r4 behind my 5.3 i used the hughes flexplate part#hp4004 , ls1 adapter #hp3795 thats all you will need to bolt the turbo 400 it has both bolt patterns for the two converters but the 700r4 will need the bowtie overdrive throttle valve cable kit, just completed the swap, so any questions just hit me up

Wow thanks 5.3swapn1992! That is some good info there. I have been searching for a 4L60E but after hearing all the reliability issues and all the extra stuff required w/making a 4L80E work it does sound more inviting to go w/the 700 or the 400. Now which to go w/and what to do w/the wiring? Hmmm.....

Using a 4l80e is actually really easy. Just need a 6.0 flexplate and spacer then change two pins in the harness if you have a 4l60e harness. Then add a vss connector.

What throttle cable did you use, and did you need a throttle cable/tv cable bracket with the bowties kit
-
bowtie overdrives sells two cable tv kits ,one that works with the truck intakes and one for the ls1 style intake, they come with everything to install ,throttle valve spring ,braided cable, brackets ,throttlebody adapter bracket and all misc. stuff

Another ? how do you control the TCC lockup? Do you let the old style truck run it off the old ecm or do you have to use a standalone lock up kit like tci or the gm performance one.
-
Decided to go with the TCI kit, it does a little more than the gm kit for 10 dollars more. Allows lock up in 2-4 and manual lockup too. I will have my computer setup for basically a m/t with no automatic controls and the let the transmission do its own job.
-
If you power the TCC with the wire on the brake switch that has 12v when up and off when the brake is pressed, the TCC will be unlocked during braking.
-
I read that in TCI's directions. They list it as an optional way to install it. What is the benefit of having it unlocked when brakes are hit? It will unlock anyhow when it downshifts right.
-
Got everything bolted up now. Using a TCI lockup kit and getting the power from my factory trans harness terminal A is 12+ unitl brakes are pressed then circuit opens. This works with option 3 in TCI's instructions. It will disengage the lockup when brakes are pressed as well as upon downshift.
I am wondering what people have used for a dust cover? the old on from my 350/700 doesn't fit the ls motor. would one from a 5.3 truck w/ 4l60e work with the 700?
