Color matched tail lights.

I have seen 2 trucks with color matched (instead of blacked out) tail lights and on both trucks it looks good. Has anyone here tried it yet? What all is involved? Special paint or just regular factory match? I want to find someone to do mine if it still lets light through.

You spray it with clear with a SMALL amount of paint mixed in...several light coats. Works awesome

i wonder if you can do this to like the headlight also? i would like to see a pic of that

I did mine to match my blue truck. I sanded them with a grey scotchbrite pad then dusted base coat around the edges. After that I used blender and mixed it 50/50 base coat/blender and sprayed the whole light with that until i got the desired darkness. Then I sprayed them with clear. Wet sanded them and recleared them then wet sanded again and buffed them. I did my third brake light also. I get more compliments on that alone than I do on the rest of the truck. It should take about a day to do them with dry time if you have a heated booth or an oven. If you have an oven let the clear dry till you can barely see a finger print on the surface you painted them on and not the light itself. Once they are dry to the touch put them in the oven for a few minutes at 120 degrees to finish.

I've seen white/blue/grey/black lights.


Lighter colors show a little better color then dark, but with headlights, you're going to loose some output no matter what. People will def see you, but I wouldn't want to be on backroads with them.

Thats when HID's and the HI4 mod comes in handy

They don't help as much as you'd think. I've got a 7 hi mod done (HIDs/brights/3 KCs) all come on when I pull the brights lever....still not bright enough (although I can see about a mile down the road and 30 feet off each side lol)

I would think a white truck would look better with led brake lights with a clear lense so you could see the chrome reflector behind the lense. I like the way white trucks look with chrome.

Ive done it several times. Don't mix base with clear if its a metallic thats a no no.

Thus the need for blender.

DBC500 Works like a charm.

You probably know better than I do if your a paint and body guy. I just went off of what our painter said to use. When I find a way to post pics on here I will post a pic of mine.

dont try to mask off the reverse lights tho.. makes a nasty tape edge in your finished product

I wonder if that "Frog Tape" meant for house paint would be any better than masking tape?

Nope. Use blue fine line to outline the reverse section, then regular masking tape on the inside, and after you get the color where you want it, put 3-5 coats of clear, but watch the flash times so it doesn't solvent pop, and sand and buff, and the line will barely be visible, if you do 5 coats of clear, you want even be able to feel the line if buffed out right.

I saw that on another forum and I think that is bad ass! Its painted inside like a vette. Nobody seems to make a nice looking aftermarket light for our trucks. So its up to us to make use with what we already have.

I think they look great on some vehicles, but around here that would last 10 mins and the cops would have you hemped up.. Thats the reason I sold my smoked tails.. Man you can't do shit with out the man coming down on ya..

maybe where you live the cops are like that but where I live you can get away with almost everything..knock on wood.
