if anybody's got or knows where to get a Hurst Competition Plus short-throw shifter for the 99-03 NV3500 trucks, please let me know.

Those are nice, I had one in my 92 before I put an automatic in it. Its a shame the 5 speeds were so lame.
didnt some have the nv4500 though?

They're discontinued so ya gotta get creative. But I'll tell you this sir, I have an SLP handle it was like 20 bucks, it has no bushing in the base and doesn't bind up like the stocker. Resonates some gear whine into the cab though, which I like
what do you mean, "bind up"? you talking about the 2-3 shift? does it smooth that out somehow or something?
Uhm I'm not sure how to explain it, since my truck was new the shifter would bind up in between all the gears if I really started throwin it. It was the bushing in the bottom of the shifter, it would give just enough that it didnt fall into gear. Replaced the handle with the solid billet piece and it's never happened again. I always found the 1-2 to be a bigger PITA than the 2-3 to me its almost like

i sorta know what ya mean, but i find having to double-clutch 2/3 to speed-shift to be a bigger pain
did you happen to change the gear oil in the transmission to something thicker than stock? IIRC they used oil similar to ATF in the manual transmissions.
nope - just used regular Pennzoil Synchromesh, which is an approved substitute for GM Synchromesh.
