a little exhaust change
the situation: so, in preparation for my long tube headers, i decided to do a little exhaust work to Penny. for the past 3.5 years, i've just been running a 3" mid pipe to a dumped chambered muffler. i knew after the LTs, that was just gonna be way too much bed-rattling goodness for my taste, so i decided to add some tail pipes out the back. i've also heard the argument that with certain mufflers, you lose some low-end torque when it's dumped, so i was also eager to check the validity of that statement.
the new hardware: dual 2.25" 14 gauge aluminized steel tail pipes into 3.5"x22" t304 stainless tips
the difference: it's a little hard to tell in the video, but the exhaust note is now a little more defined & deeper. it also dropped the slight drone from ~2000rpm to ~1650rpm - which reduced highway noise @ 70mph (i can hear the radio & talk to people much easier now). it's generally much quieter in the cab - so much so that i stalled it a couple times because i couldn't hear as i was letting the clutch out. as for the torque difference, it did pick up a little in the low-end, but i believe it might've lost a little top-end because the comparisons you'll see at the end of the video still come out to the same time. the way i know the bottom of the curve is a little fatter is by the fact that i can shift at slightly lower RPMs without bogging the engine - perfect example is shifting to 3rd @ 2000rpm. before, it started bogging even with light throttle, but now i can perform the same shift with the same throttle pressure no problem.
now - for the picture show

You are having way too much fun with your truck now
-
no........
actually, work's just picked up a little more & i'm trying to get some crap done before i go to the Camaro5Fest @ south georgia motorsports park & dragging some of my friends there. that & once i start OTS, who knows when i'll get to start playing with the truck again?

went back & watched this again
wow... sounds like a pussy now that i've had catless long tubes for the past couple years :)
it'll sound even better when i can afford the 416LS3

yes, as in two and one quarter inches in diameter.
and that link apparently changed when they reworked photobucket

i wouldnt go anything smaller than 2.5".
-
and let me guess - you'd also recommend a 228 cam, 1 7/8 headers & full dual 3" for a 4.8 too, right?
this is a stock 5.3. it's already got 1.75" LTs with 2.5" Y followed by a 3" mid. and if you grab a calculator, you'll see that dual 2.25" pipes have 12.5% more volume than a single 3", so actually, the bottleneck in the exhaust is the same mid pipe that everybody & their brother swears by.

I wasn't questioning the logic. Just not your typical combo. I guess I was questioning the reasoning for making it more difficult that it should have been.
-
oh, gotcha.
it was to keep from opening up too much & losing exhaust velocity (which is typically why people lose low-end torque). and on top of that, he had it in stock (as opposed to being out of 2.5).
and i thought you might've suspected i made a typo or something. my comment was more directed at the other guy
-
then again, i've been running around for the last year & a half with 1 7/8" headers & dual 3" on my LS1 - which is a bit of overkill.
...but then again, i've also got a TVS2300 on it & did the exhaust with a 402 or 416 in mind

Hey go fuk yourself.. Ain't no need for a buncha smartass remarks.

and you can take a chill pill, tough guy. especially on a forum like this one, you can't run around with sand in your vag & get upset at every little comment somebody makes.
i appreciate your opinion of using 2.5" pipe or bigger - more power to ya. there are plenty of people who go around preaching that "you can't go wrong with thus & such" when A) they might not know the specifics of a project, B) they see a ton of others using a particular setup & think it must be a great recommendation for everybody else or just in general, or C) the work was already done almost 3 years ago. and since i don't know you, i just went with the standard reckoning of somebody who just throws out suggestions because they've seen it in a bunch of other builds (like the majority of suggestions thrown around here and other forums). sorry you got your panties in a bunch over it.
ps - thanks for such a wonderfully-worded PM. it really touched my heart. Merry Christmas to you, too.
-
Great I hope you enjoyed it. But like I said before, go fuck yourself. Merry Christmas to you too, dick.
