please help with fan clutch

well i got a 6.0 im working on and i want the stock fan gone. i took my old clutch tool and drilled holes in it and welded in some pieces of concrete bits to make a spanner. i have bowed up enough to break it (the tool ) several times in both directions and it wont budge. is there a trick to this guy on net said it breaks to left if your standing in front of engine guy at gm shop said to the right. I put enough on it both ways im amazed something did not break. why did they decide to put small holes in the pully as a place to grab it. i even taped pretty good with a hammer both ways to try to break it nope. I dont want to ruin the pully and pump trying to get it off and im afraid heat will trash the pump bearing....

The best way I have found is a good 12inch crescent wrench and a large hammer. Don't ask me why, because I can't explain it but a dead pull with a piece of pipe on the darn thing won't work. However, whacking the wrench with a large hammer will get it loose just about every time.

Lol I ran into the same thing. I even got the gm tool and still nothing. So I sawzalled the mofo off at the end. Ran a cut wheel carefully down the side of the nut and it came off easy as pie. Struggled with it for 5 hours, and my method took 45 minutes, had way more room and no cussing

Take a air hammer with a chisel bit and about 5 seconds later its off. Catch the edge of the nut to the left and down and it will spin loose.

Exactly..works every time. Leave the belt on while doing this.

you must keep the pulley from moving as well which is why you must leave the belt on. or get a ratchet strap to keep the pully from moving.

well the belt was gone when i bought it so thats why i made the spanner and with a 15in cresent and a hammer hitting hard enough to brake concrete bits it did not budge not once but about 7 times i broke bits, steel dowl, screws, most of my effort was going to the left because that made sense to me. my next thought was sawzall and cut off tool just wondered what others did, im a firm believer of a smack over the dead pull but it just did not work this time

lets start from the beginning:
tools - socket set, flat head, vice grips, ratchet strap and a 36mm wrench. you can borrow the wrench from an auto parts store if you dont have one.
take off the cover, top half of the fan shroud, all hoses

you can do one of two things
1.you can use the strap to hold the pulley in place then turn the 36mm wrench counterclockwise as you see it from the front of the vehicle looking toward the engine.

2.take the water pump off the engine. use a set of vice grips to hold the pulley and turn the fan in the same direction as stated before until the vice grips catch on the pump. should be able to break it this way but you might mess up the pulley in the process.

trust me bud, sawzall is a easy quick fix if you just want it off. just make sure you have a new blade and go slow with her

thats the same way i do it, if not i just use a chisel and a 5lb hammer just a couple of hits and its off

take an abrasive saw to the nut and split it. You may have to do it on two sides to relieve the tension. It should spin off easier that way.

well guys i got it off but i don't know how long my water pump will last. i cut into the pully a little. so i hope its not out of balance . i ended up cutting it compleatly off cause it still would not budge even with reliefe cuts and a back up still broke the spanner. that idea gm had sucked lets go back to 4 bolts. anyhow if any one has a spare pully i will buy it out right for the future or i have a complete ac bracket/compressor,belt and tensioner we can swap it wont clear my frame so im gonna have 2/70 ac 2 windows down and 70 mph lol... thanks for all the help

i always use a punch and a hammer to pull and put mine back on works great.

i have my entire waterpump, that i replaced. turned out the seals were bad and it should still be good.

well i found out yesterday that a new or reman water pump comes with pully so when it goes out ill just swap the whole thing thanks again for all the help guys
