Rear End Noise?
I have a 99 z71 silverado, stock gears, when i hit the gas and spin the tires, either on or off road, the rear end makes a clicking/shuttering noise that is pretty loud. Is this normal or should i start looking for a new rear end? and would changing the gear oil over to synthetic help at all? the noise doesnt sound good. thanks for the help.

Sounds like you need a rear.
-
the stock Diff if it has the factory locker makes a noise when the diff engages
-
should that noise just be one single sound or a bunch of clicks.
-
Sounds to me like your pin is getting ready to come throught the cover. Take the cover off and inspect it.
-
what should i be looking for.
-
Metal shavings.....check to see if the pin is secure and still in place.
-
If you have the G80, that noise is normal. I was scared when mine first made noise, but its just the diff locking/unlocking.
-
how can i find out if i have a G80. what should i look for.
-
Look for G80 in the glove box, in the rpo codes.
-
you must have a G80 from your description, replace ASAP before it grenades and takes the carrier, gears and transmission with it on its way out.
-
well super.. anyone have an idea for a new gear set and rear end i should buy. i only have 300 bucks left over from selling my other truck, i would like something strong that can handle burnouts, off roading, and extra power from a cam and supercharger. thanks for all the help.
-
It doesn't have the "grenade 80" nickname for nothing!!!!
-
300 wont get you much. 400 will get you a tru trac 600 will get you a tru trac,gears and install kit but then you need to get it installed
-
well this is a problem, what can i do to maybe avoid this rear end blowing up. and can someone send me some links for new rear gear sets, that are cheaper and good brands, how hard would an install be for new a rear end. i have done minor rear diff work on a muscle car, but it has been a long time.

Ha, typical noises from a higher mileage G80. It could be other things, but do what Gavin said and look on the lid of the glovebox for the RPO codes and see if you see G80. You can also look to see what your gear ratio is--
GU5 = 3.23
GU6 = 3.42
GT4 = 3.73
GT5 = 4.10
$300 will get you another used G80, but I would try to pony up for the Detroit Truetrac. They can be had for $400. I don't see the need for new gears unless the pinion looks like it has chunks or cracks in it, so just replace the carrier. In some applications, you can get away with using the factory shims, but I would look at getting a new cover gasket.

is there maybe a stock rear end i can get out of a junk yard that will stand up to some good abuse, and will fit my truck.
-
It will be cheaper to just buy the tru trac and be done with it.
-
Do you think you can give me a run through of the install, How hard is it going to be, and will i still be able to roast both tires? What are the advantages of a tru trac rear end?
-
There is a write up for the eaton unit. You will be able to do both tires no problem.
-
The noise does not mean that it is going out. Yes its a good idea to get something better, but the noise you are hearing is normal. The G80 rear end is not given much credit for being able to hold up to abuse, so take it easy with your lead foot and it will last longer.

After grenading my G80 I installed an Auburn posi-unit and it's been great to me. Whines a bit but over all works good.
-
whining would be the gear setup not the Auburn unless you have bad bearings. :twocents:

I did have the gears changed too, that could be the issue. This was several years ago that I had all that changed out. I wonder how long that will last? It only whines when I let off the gas.
