at what point do you grow out of single 3" exhaust?

Im fixing to either have a new Y pipe made, or completely redo my exhaust from the headers back…

At what point do you outgrow single exhaust? I have a 5.7 LS1 with patriot stage 2 LS6 heads, 231/239 111+2 cam, a ported fast 90mm intake, pacesetters, functional ram air and full bolt on’s all the way around it. Last time on the dyno it put down 430 to the ground. Since then ive added the ported fast 90mm. it also has 2 nitrous kits on it and eventually will hit a 250 shot. I know I am leaving some power on the table with my current Y pipe. It was the first gen pacesetter setup and the drivers portion of the ORY T’s into the passenger side instead of merging into the exhaust as a Y. here are some insane paint skills for illustration:tvhaha:

anyways, I can either build the Y pipe that I want to free up some power, or go for a true dual setup with an X and some 18” long dynomax bullets (biggest they make). Am I making enough power to justify a 3” true dual x-pipe setup?

IMO you should be thinking about duals with around 450rwhp NA. Dual 3" will really shine in the upper rpms especially with the nitrous.

I think if you lost anything down low it wouldn't be noticable.

Especially with the torque of nitrous you won't lose abythig IMO. I'd rather have too much exhaust than too little if it cam down to it too...

I honestly think you have enough to justify the dual 3" setup. You might notice a TAD of a low end difference, but not enough to write home about.

Do the same exhaust routing that the 6.0L trucks run with the dynomax bullets. :thumb:

Who would write home about losing low end on their truck after an exhaust upgrade? That's crazy talk! :LOL:

If it helps:

Had a G8 in here, did some mods along with a cam.
Put 422hp down, I think.
But was I did remember was, we swapped out the 1 5/8 headers for 1 3/4" headers, had straight dual, no exhaust.
The car lost power, down to 415hp with larger exhaust.
Downlow, the loss in power was noticable.

Customer cam back, we put on his stock mufflers (will with big headers and catless mid pipes) and the car picked up the lowend sotp.

I think the car didn't have enough power to justify the large headers and straight exhaust.

I do like how the aftermarket new camaro exhaust is, big pipes all the to the middle of the car, then they back it down to 2.5" after that, out the back.

i hope you have a fuel cell installed, if not running that type of dual setup will be difficult, i'm ''planning'' on switching to a rear mounted fuel cell which will lead to tru-duals and an x-pipe later

unless you cut it off really short, theres not enough room there from the header to muffler then turned down, i routed mine on the same side on both trucks. fixing to remove driverside and have it come straight back ;) cause theres no tank there on the red truck :)

well, i pulled the trigger. all parts are on order. kooks stepped headers, all mandrel bends, 18" dynomax bullets, and skeet is hooking me up bigtime with a magnaflow 3" x pipe. hopefully im not putting too big of an exhaust on it for N/A but im 100% sure that the motor will love the big exhaust when i arm that switch:nx:

So are the Kooks headers designed for a Silverado -OR- for a F-body? You need to share pics with us and show us how well they fit along with how much clearance is there between everything :)

they are f-body headers. i decided to go with the 1 7/8 stepped to 2" with a 3.5" collector.

i have a feeling my LS1 is on it's way out. its drinking tons of oil and blowing out the dipstick tube. sounds like a ring going to me. if so its getting a fresh rebuild with some forged pistons and a bigger shot. all pending the compression and leakdown test tonight.

if the motor is bad, i wouldnt blame it. the guy before me had a MS3 and 200 shot on the motor, and i have my cam and 150 through it. it has about 140,000 HARD miles on her. im impressed with how well its run for its age/miles. last time to the track was 11.5 on a 125 shot. i still think it has more in it even if it has a bad ring or 2.
