Eco green oil...your thoughts?

We just started selling re-refined used oil. I was kind of sketchy at first, we had a 2 hour long meeting yesterday on the whole process and technology on how they take used oil they pump from dealerships, train yards, etc... and run it through a re-refinery station, which takes out all the detergents, dirt and additives, which leaves just the base oil (which apparently doesnt break down). Then they add in all that other stuff again to make new ''eco-green'' oil. They said on average it take 2 barrels of crude oil to make oil for 1 oil change (given the average oil change being 4-5 quarts) because they only get about half a gallon of useable crude oil per barrel to make motor oil, the rest of that barrel is turnned into fuel. And with the the eco-green oil if they were to use a whole barrel of used oil, they could make 25 gallons or re-refined oil.

So on one had you have USA saving money from not having to buy as much crude oil from overseas...

And on the other you have the little voice in your head saying ''Hey im putting used oil back in my motor''

Sounds like a very good sales pitch, that apparently worked. I always though synthetic oil doesn't break down, and that regular oil does. I suppose adding more crap to the oil will recondition its ability to work again. Over by me, we just switched to a universal trans. fluid that covers all kinds of trans. fluid, which to me is way more sketchy than re-reconditioned engine oil.

Why don't you support Al Gore while your at it with your green oil. It's connected with him

synthetic oil breaks down just the same as regular oil....its not so much adding more crap its stripping the dirty additives from the base oil and just replacing it with clean additives..

i guess the way i see it if we can keep our money here in the states....ill give this stuff a shot!

Go Green oil.......maybe. Need one of those cool infomercials. Two engines side by side, running new and 1 green oil. Put it to the test.

They need to make that stuff mandatory in hybrids and leave the virgin oils for us that abuse engines. :rock:

they make this stuff in 0w20 5w30 10w30 15w40 so far...he said in texas, mostly austin, its a huge success

I wouldn't be against trying it in 10 years after they've done all the comparisons and such. I wouldn't toss just ANY oil into a tight tolerance motor like an LS though. Maybe in an old 350...

Price will make a huge difference in if people will buy it. How much does it run?

What does it cost to filter and refine old oil. Hmmmmm

I have not seen one quart of this "eco" oil around the Austin area. Any chance you know the name of the oil?

I have used what is called "green" hydraulic oil in some ROV's in the past. But it was crap and would eat up seals and insulation on wires in J-boxes. CRAP. But maybe that just the oilfield trash looking out for my job coming out of me.

That's because most of the population in austin claim 'liberal' status not all, but most. I don't have a problem with it. but there is plenty of oil in the U.S. if they'd stop saving it for later they could use it

It is not a bad idea to start looking into getting eco-oil out there so that reliability can be proven. Too many people are skeptical about running recycled oil.

If it is cheaper than baseline conventional oil, then I'd run it...in the Honda! I would never run recycled oil in a high performance motor. UNLESS reliability reports prove so otherwise.

Uhhh. You could go to a gas station and get some of that badass oil.

this is from a company called universal lubricants. It is 1.00 less a quart than our bulk oil before mark up, which doesnt sound like much but some of our volvos take 8 quarts, and volvo customers count pennies lol. Our local honda dealership was the first to start selling this oil 4 months ago, and their oil change sales have increased. And so far they havent had any foul ups, or spun bearings. Now granted hondas arent high performance engines, but they run on 5w20 and 0w20, those are pretty tight tolerence engines. Now does this mean I am going to run out and run it in my truck, no, but i may after i see some results after long term use
