I'm looking to upgrade my factory G80. I had in mind an Eaton True Trac but Thunder Racing recommended a Moser differential because it either doesn't require the special bearings or comes with them (can't remember??). The local shop around here suggested an Auburn Carrier and they have one in stock for $390. I'm just looking to get some input on what would be my best bet to withstand a high horsepower application.

Tru Trac has show to be the strongest on this site and probably will come out to be advised more. I run a Eaton posi and it is pretty well equal to the auburn from ratings I've see. Both are pretty good.
+1 on the Detroit TrueTrac. Get one from Ron's. You should also get a Master Install Kit for the GM 8.6 10 Bolt.
i like the true trac...i have had both Auburn and True Trac and i replaced the Auburn after a month cause i blew it up just like the g80...pissed me off cause it took everything out...Havent had any problems with the True Trac at all

I have TrueTracs front and rear in my Blazer and loved them. They chattered a slight bit during the first 2-3 weeks during break-in, but were seamless and invisible after that. I think I ran my Blazer about 15K miles after I did the axles before the transmission and motor let go and I parked it.....zero problems from the diffs in that time. I was also on the Volunteer Fire Department at that time, so they saw HARD use from every stop as well as mild offroading. I also put Moser axles in the rear.
I wouldn't go with Auburn. They seem to wear out much faster. Their disc-type clutch units are rebuildable, but who wants to even mess with that? Their cone-type units are not rebuildable. The Auburn Pro in my Mustang needs to be replaced, it doesn't spin both tires during a burnout when using slicks. To be fair though, I have no idea how old it is as it was already in the car when I bought it.
I just spent about 3 hours surfing and looking at people's experiences with different diffs. I looked specifically at the Detroit Locker and the Auburn Ected, as those were pretty much the only other options (besides True Trac) I was considering when it comes time to do my truck. I've come to the conclusion that everyone here is right and the TrueTrac is the best all-around choice for street use.
