5.3 s10?
I'm working on an s10 for a daily driver. It needs a motor, so I'm debating swapping in a 5.3 instead. They make great power and seem to be reliable. Before I commit myself though, I want a better idea of cost. I have found a few around ranging from 3-500.
The harness I understand I can modify myself (1998 4.3 s10)
Stock f-body headers
Will stock truck intake work? It makes more overall tq than the ls1/6. If the truck intake will work, will the stock truck accessories work?
The crossmember notch I'm aware of, and obviously motor mounts. I also plan on swapping a t56 in place of the stock t5.
I'm hoping I can do the motor alone for under $1500.
The truck should get pretty decent mileage with a 6-speed too. It is 4x4 though, which I don't need and would lose. I have a big Blazer for this snowy globally warmed winter. It would be better to start with a 2wd truck, but hard to find.
Any input is helpful.

h3 oil pan also will be needed, they have swap shorties now for that project
-
Oh yea forgot the pan, last I read, the f-body is the one everyone used, but I guess the H3 is cheaper?
I thought the headers were real expensive, but I just found some by Patriot for 250 bucks.
Things seemed to have changed since I researched this a year ago. Must be getting popular.

good place to check out, been reading it over several times to do my swap

h3 pan doesnt need the frame notched. the H3 is similar to the Gbody/s10 front frame
-
T56 doesn't get along with 4x4. Sorry.
-
I know, I don't really want it anyway. I'd much rather start with a 2wd truck. I don't need the 4x4 and I think 2wd rides better, not mention a good deal lighter.
Seems to be hard to find an ext cab 2wd though.

h3 pan hangs an inch or 2 below the frame.
-
Thats ok, I don't think I'm going to lower the truck or take it off road much.
-
thats the best pan for you. Ive seen people still notch with the h3, just for ease of install and removal.
-
I'm doing the same swap but Im using an ls6 in a 2wd. I picked up a h3 oil pan for it, Seeing how tight it was to get the old 4.3 out I think i'm still gonna notch out the crossmember.
-
Just to be clear for people not familiar with this, it's the H3 Alpha oil pan. (for the 5.3)
-
What oil pump pickup do you use?
-
not sure which pickup it is, I got it with the pan, I'm assuming its the one for the h3.
-
yes, you use the H3 pickup with the H3 pan.
-
yes you can use the truck intake and acc., yes you can use the f-body manifolds, but I would spring for the shorties. if you take out your 4wd you will lighten the truck alot, also I dont think you will need to notch anything since its a 4x4 and your taking out the frojnt diff. the wiring harness you modify will be the one that came on the 5.3, you will also need the computer for the 5.3.
pm me if you have any other questions and check the build in my sig

Well now that just makes it sounds easy. Thanks for the info. I'll go with the shorties. This truck will be a daily driver and I plan on having it a LONG time. I'm tired of buying and selling vehicles every two years.

Sounds like a fun project. Depending on the budget, I would suggest buying the conversion harness. It makes things so much easier. It took me 3 months to do my conversion by myself (1991 S10 reg cab 4.3L auto). I have about 15k miles on my conversion and use it as my daily driver from April to October.
