w-6 are real nice subs they just require more box space but if you have the room i would say go for it . a sealed enclosure would sound better i feel it gives a cleaner hitting bass if you want deeper bass then go with a ported and i would stay away from bandpass boxes i feel they have real sloppy sounding bass. for that sub i would go with a 500/1 0r 1000/1 amp from JL.and runs the subs in parrell or bridged. it all depends on how hard you want it to hit and how long you want it to last a 500/1 has alot of power considering its only 500 but that amp would easily compare to another brand 1000 watt amp. JL amps are expensive but worth it the next amp to choose would be a kicker amp very good amp just a little better on your wallet. i am running a W-6 and a 500/1 amp and have had no problems for years and it still sound awsome. hope this helps. also depending of your power need from you stereo and truck if you have power problems like dimming lights i have a nice powermaster GM style 200 amp alternator real cheap if your interested
already have a Z-56 Hi-output AMP and two Yellow top Optmia Bats
So a 500Watt AMP will work? what am I looking at dollor wise? for everthing and what model #'s are they? I am Deployed in Afghaniston and trying to have My girl get this stuff before I get home so it is ready for Me to jump in and turn key.
I have a LT that has the Z-56 up-Grade the person I got it from was a DEA agent. so it has all the hidden toys. :)
Oh and Thank You Very Much petey62782!
Petey, I may be interested in that alternator.
I would go with the jl 1000/1 if you are doing two w6's. They cost about $1000. A good rule of thumb on jl amps is $1 per watt. Sealed or ported it will SLAM! One thing good about jl subs is they are very crisp in a ported box also, it's all about what you prefer, but I would go ported if it were mine.
So I am looking right at about $1500.00 for AMP and 2 W-6 12" subs right?
Now if I have a Ported box for two MTX thunderstorm 5500 12" subs will it work or get a new or get on custom made?
Lo I have that same alternator and love it.
yeah it is a Good one.
You're very misleading.
1) Ported boxes are sloppy (if not done correctly)
2) Sealed boxes will be in general, half as loud as a proper ported box
3) Bandpass isn't sloppy. Bandpass is normally VERY clean bass, but it is also normally boomy in certain regions and it's impossible to hit the lows (sub 35 hz) in them.
4) A single 500/1 is tiny for two W6's. A watt is a watt is a watt. True watts are equal, regardless of if its JL or Pyramid.
If you insist on going JL, don't go smaller than the 1000/1.
At least someone knows what the hell they're talking about here.
For 1500$ I could build you a setup that hit twice as hard and sounded just as good. I'm sure you would be fine with that box, but I strongly suggest you get one custom made for the subs. W6's and MTX 5500 are in a completely different ballpark when it comes to specs.
Do you want my HONEST opinion? JL is overpriced and overrated. Its easy for me to say that since I've run both underground companies like Resonant Engineering when they first came out, to Digital Designs, one of the best sub and amp companies in the world. I refuse to use mass produced audio equipment. For 1500$ you could have a brand new DD9515 on about any amp you wanted... we're talking over 3000 watts easily. You could have two Audioque HD3's. You could have some of the new DC subs, Fi, or Adire.
Just my .02
Couldn't have said that better myself.
ok so pl4yboy what am I looking at cost wise to do something with two 12" subs that sounds as Good and Crisp as JL W-6 12's? My buddy has two and they sound awsome.? also I have Pioneer 6 1/2 round compoants and My doors I need a good AMP. what do You recomand?
I suggest you listen to a few things before you decide on anything. The install is going to be the most important thing when it comes to SQ. An improper box will cause even the best sub to sound like ass. Are you planning to go sealed or ported? How much area do you have?
I am willing tol give up half the cargo area behind the secound row. I dont use the third row. I was leaning toward Ported.
I can't say anything more than lo-lyf and Pl4yboy said, since, well......I read basically all the advice they give here and learn from them.
Matching the box to the subs is absolutely critical. There's like, actual math and stuff involved. If you re-use an old box for new subs and it's too small, it'll suck. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe if the box is too big you can at least compensate with filler to reduce the volume.
Ported boxes are a bit more complex as you must also worry about port size and tube length, again determined by maths. However, I think the general consensus is that the added complexity is worth it if done right.
I have a JL Midgate Stealthbox (sealed) with 2 12s in my Avalanche. I'm not sure if they're W3s or W6s, but I think it came with W6s. I'm running a 400W RMS Alpine amp to it and yeah, I'm wanting more. The 500/1 would sound good and get the job done, but if you want to do it once and be satisfied for a LONG time without feeling the need to redo it later, the1000/1 would be the way to go. I'm looking to upgrade to the 700-750W ballpark for my subs and pretty sure I'll go with amps from Diamond Audio. I might have to go higher on the sub amp to balance the sound with my door speakers, and if I do I'll replace the subs and look at DD like Pl4yboy likes.
My system in my truck was my present to myself when I came back from Iraq in '05, so we have a LOT in common heh. I didn't research beforehand like you're doing though, and I should have. Smart move on your part, man. I just went down to the stereo shop, asked "What do you think?" and had them do it. I'm going to be redoing almost everything in the next year or two as cash allows.
Petey, consider me in line behind lo-lyf for the alternator please. He gets first dibs, but if he doesn't end up taking it we can talk :)
Digitalboy0101 are You still in? thanks for the imput is there a pre-fab box made for the W-6 12" subs? ported or not? and ya'll are saying Dimond subs are good? if so what models, and RMS, are they duel voice coil?
it's all you dude, first come first serve. I am saving up for a dually I found, so i will not be buying anything else for my truck until I buy the diesel.
I have D3 10's in mine and love them. They are 400W RMS and 800 max, they are dual voice coil. Check out diamondaudio.com for full specs on all models. The site is a little hard to navigate around but with some time you should figure it all out.
so will this amp work for two JL W-6 12's? NEW JL AUDIO 1000/1 V2 SLASH MONO CAR AMPLIFIER AMP 1V2
JL are very forgiving speakers...meaning they sound pretty good in any box, but a custom ported box will sound the best, (assuming the builder knows how to build a proper ported box)...in the right box u will love the JL subs, and i think you should be able to get a 1000Slash for about $600 now, the price has dropped quite a bit on them. i run JL and i love them, it will be hard for me to buy anything but JL Audio from now on, sound quality is amazing! and mine is in a ported box.
did a local shop do yours? which model JL's are you running? what AMP model and what watt and RMS?
i built the box, i have w3v2 subs and a crossfire amp
Yeah, I forgot to mention that JL subs LOVE ported boxes. They are alot like Diamond IMO, after working for a JL dealer I realized how close they are. Since I am still buddies with my Diamond dealer I would rather send my money his way(he gives me a better deal even after I burnt off across town to work for the competition).
For 600 bucks, I got my KX2500.1 brand new, with a warranty... thats TRIPLE the watts (birth sheet was at 2880). I've said it once and I'll say it again... a watt is a watt is a watt. You could get a freaking Hifonics and IDC who you are... it sounds just the same as any other mono amplifier.
If some of you guys heard my DD, I promise you you'd drop any other company there was if you're into SQL. Yes, you pay the price, but you get what you pay for. I can't say the same for JL. You overpay for a mediocre mass produced sub. You can get comparable subs for half the price. I say this again... I STRONGLY, STRONGLY suggest you look into the Treo SSi, Fi Q, Soundsplinter RL-P, or the ID max.

Hey, man. No, I'm out now. With my stupid work hours and days off at my full time job, I just couldn't give up the sleep hours on drill weekends in the Reserves. My body can't handle a screwy schedule anymore, it needs as much consistency as possible. If I was still in, I wouldn't be happy about going over again but of course would if I had to. That's not why I'm not in anymore, it's all about my damn sleeping problems.
It sucks, as I had something like 16-17 total years in and I REALLY wanted to stick it out for retirement. I did Navy, National Guard, and Army. Navy was AD, rest was Reserves.
yeah tell me about it. the hours suck the always on Da clock part suckdtoo.
Z-56, watch yourself over there man. When it's getting close to time to come home is when you can get complacent and accidents (or worse) happen. Stay focused on your job until you're on the plane home, and bitch-slap anyone around you that looks like they're day dreaming. First things first, and home will come (though never soon enough!).
Petey, shoot me a PM if you're interested in selling your alternator please.
lol yeah we are doiwn to 86 days. That is so true about getting messed up at the end.
