Transmission trouble/ Best way to beef up a 4l60e??

I was leaving work last night and suddenly I hear a pop then a loud whinning sound coming from the transmission and when the truck is moving it feels like the parking break is on. I circled around the lot and came back to a parking space to check things out. now the truck has lost reverse and is even making a slight whine while its in park. The fluid seemed ok. Do you guys think I'm looking at a rebuild? and if so what could be done to build it a little tougher? I've never had much transmission problems so I still don't know much about them.

the guy doesnt need a 4l80e even with his furture mods, he needs a FLT or Performabuilt 4l60e!!

lol thanks for the quick responses. I knew the "4l80e upgrade suggestion" was gonna come up. Theres no way I'd buy a dodge. This my only winter vehicle so I don't really have time and I really dont have the money to buy a new transmission as much as I'd like to. I just got the truck towed home about an hour ago and the owner of the tow truck who is an experienced mechanic suggested that its most likely the pump starving for fluid. It'll move forward but whines like crazy, but theres no reverse at all. I guess I'll pull the pan and see if the filters clogged then go from there.

Sorry...ive been thru alot with the trans thing....and it turns out it was electrical issues killing mine!!!!!

so youre saying a FLT transmission, will not hold maybe 330-430 rwhp?

i can understand if he was putting down some serious rwhp but with his mods and his future mods arent even close to wanting to go 4l80e..

do some searching, stew (Txsilverado) which is probably well over 550 to 650 with a nice size shot of the juice is on a performabuilt 4l60e myself i am about 470 NA and climbing fixing to add a 200 shot and was gaurantied it would hold, i been launching with the same tranny for over 2 years now without issues ;) and i hit the track just about every week..


to the OP i personally think youre fine with a built 4l60e, but personally i wouldnt let just some local shop build it, i would go with a reputeable shop that is known to build stout 4l60e's. it took me 3 shops to finally realize what i been missing and that was a performabuilt tranny, plus have a FLT which i would highly reccomend ;)

also i wont leave out the 4l80e they are very stout tranny's the only reason i am saying 4l60e is cause your mod list and your future doesnt call for the conversion ;)

nope not sayin at all the the 60e is a bad trans just sayin that an 80 would probably be the better choice at this time

Well I know I'm not making power any where close to needing an 80e and even if i was approaching that point I'm not capable or willing to do the swap at this time. I'm just trying to get any suggestions on what may be the cause of whats happened and what,if anything, I can do to avoid an entire rebuild. This is only my dd and will not make enough power to need a "performance built" transmission. I just have to figure out where to start looking so I can figure out what to do. I'm gonna call a few shops and see what a rebuild will cost me, but I may still attempt it myself I just really hate working in the cold.

So no one on this site knows about transmissions huh?

You are incorrect here. I have a friend who has blown 3 stock 60s with a stock motor and no tune. Regardless of how much you think you need... go with an upgraded 60e. Have a decent one built because with a 60e, it isn't IF, its WHEN.

you know after reading your post over again, it is odd how it broke if thats what it is but it does happen, do you have any vibration issues before this happened, i see your dropped? how much? i take it the rear end is stock, put the truck on 4 jack stands, drop the drive shaft, see if you can turn the rear tires, i would check the rearend first, before just pulling the tranny.. just cause it sounds like its coming from the tranny it could be coming from the rearend, if that pans out to be ok drop the pan, if you did break something in the tranny i am more than sure you'll have some type of shavings in the pan..

I have rebuilt several 60e trans with no reverse there is a drum in there that is bad to brake. When it brakes it will have only 2 forward gears and no reverse. It has been a while but I think it is 2nd and 4th you have or is it 1st and 3rd... There is an aftermarket drum that is stronger available.

That was my first thought too.

Ok, since you have already heard the list of good builders--either get one from them--or do you have a local guy who will build it? If so get a waaay stronger fully built input drum from PATC and this kit.

My immediate thought was that it was the rearend but after messing with it i'm pretty sure its the transmission but I'll check it all out tomorrow when i get some free time. I called a few local rebuilders today and got some rebuild prices that ranged from 1200-1500. One of the guys I talked to said it sounded like the reverse sun shell was to blame and that if that was the case it would cost about 1,000 to fix just that. I was thinking about ordering one of these and build up/repair my current trans. as I get time. $1134 shipped, seems like a good deal, but at 1600 the performa built may be the way to go.

When installing a new 4L60E, you should also install a new torque converter at the same time. True or false?

Its all in how you wanna do it. You can purchase all the performance parts online for under $500 and then remove the unit from the truck yourself and take it to a builder who will assemble it for about $350-$400.

Sometimes. Depends on the reason for the new tranny and if any modifications have been done to the motor to warrant a higher stall speed.

Alright so I just bit the bullet and ordered a level 1 and 1800-2000 stall converter form performabuilt. Should be here next week, now i just have to get off my lazy a$$ and pull the old trans.

Now knowing that I'll have a transmission capable of handling 500hp has got me looking for a 6.0l shortblock to put in next year.

That's exactly what mine was doing when it broke. Turns out "some drum"(reverse input drum or something) rotated the wrong way and broke off all the lugs in the case.

Sounds like the Sunshell broke

Sounds right, one of the shops I talked to said it sounded like the reverse sunshell or something like that was probably what failed. I'll figure it out in a few months when i get around to trying to rebuild it as a spare.

Do you guys think I should have went with a 2300-2500 stall instead of the 1800-2000? I don't plan on running a very big cam and I didn't want it to have a big effect on mileage.

I personally would have gone with a 2500+ stall, but that's just my opinion. It's not in yet, right? Exchange it!

No it's not even shipped yet. I'm thinking about calling them and going bigger but I'm not sure.

Also I pulled the pan today and didn't find anything at all wrong. Maybe whatever broke was to big to make its way into the pan?

Replace the reaction sunshell and the other worn stuff and be done with it for another 50K miles. Don't overpay for a "built" trans with a "warranty" just fix what you have.

i dont blame ya, and wouldnt even think about going to a local shop, not around here anyway, i heard to many times oh yeah we can build a tranny to hold this or that ( like 3 different times) just to smoke the dang thing in matter of weeks!!!

you picked a good builder for your tranny, not to leave FLT out niether they build awesome units also, i dont know what your goals are for the truck, but i would have went with a 3k stall at the lease ;)

I think I'll email performabuilt tomorrow and see about going with a bigger converter. How much of an effect on mileage do you guys think I'll see? Most of my driving is highway but theres some stop&go in there as well. The trucks just my dd so I try to balance performance and mileage. I'm also thinking of uping to a 6.0 next year if that makes a difference.

i wouldnt think you would suffer in mileage all that much, maybe a mile or 2 but if youre going 6.0 later i would think about a 3200 pb converters are really tight ;)
