have a question on a camshafts

ok guys so i went to get my heads P&P and i was talking to the guy i told him i was gonna go with a asa cam and he says that cam is too small for my truck this truck is a 00 ext. cab silverado, he says i should go with a Mega Death or a T-Rex cam i like how they idle but im not sure if it would work well in my truck its gonna get a 6.0 LQ4 and it is a daily driver i want something with more torque and a choppy idle and opinons ? i also did see some nice cams from vincihi performance any one have there cams?

cause it will dominate a proven cam,cause its spect specifically for your application.

talk to a meli or allen from nelson performance,,they can get you a custom grind cam.

So you're tellin me that your 219/223 .603 cam is going to dominate any other cam ever put in a 4.8? Why? Do you know? In what way is going to "dominate"?

The megadeath and the trex may be a little big for the stock 5.3...for some. I run a G5x3 which is a 236/240 .615 112lsa in mine. But I also run higher compression with 4.56 gears and 3800-4000 stall

for a 6.0 I've read lots of good reviews on the trex cam. Pulls like no other up top.

I'm not tryin to steer you away from a custom grind because I'm sure they may have a slight advantage. But they seem to be kind of the "fad" for the moment so that when asked "hey man what cam you runnin in that thing?" you can proudly say "oh it's a custom grind by bumpstick Willie". People ran off the shelf cams for years with great results.

In the end, if you can save a $100 or so by finding a used cam in the classifieds , do some research on it and if you like what you see, buy it. With that being sad, my cam is for sale :D

u just need to get a custom grind yourself,,u can ask anyone whats the best cam,,your answer will be custom grind.
i know theres proven off the shelf cams,,but why be like everyone else and get one,,when u can get a better cam to how u want it to perform and idle.

I think the biggest advantage of a custom grind cam it that most people dont REALLY know what they need. That being said i made i made pretty good power with a off the shelf cam with my turbo set up. I will be getting a custom grind cam in the near future. So either way. But the mega death is too big for your truck unless you are gonna run a high stall.

out of curiosity... how long do cams take to put in on these trucks (hour wise)


i want one, but do not want a stall...and REALLY don't want to have to pull that crank pulley off again lol


With that being said...i'm sure it will happen soon. Anyone have a suggestion for a cam that makes good power between 2-4k. I want something that will help drive ability. My truck pulls awesome up top, but is a dog when driving on the highway (with big tires, I turn 2k rpm at 80mph) I plan on getting bigger gear, but still won't be turning more then 2800, barely go above 3500 when driving around town. Not looking to race, just low end torque for towing/getting this heavy thing rolling easier.

Pick the one u want, then go two sizes smaller! Hah. Seriously. I love this forum and all the extremely intelligent people here. But for a heavy truck with a small motor go a little small on the shaft. Keep in mind who your asking when posting here. Most of us want max power and don't mind sacrifices in drivability. So your going to get suggestions for 240 ish @050 cams with 600 plus lift. But is that best for your daily driver? No. Will it dyno higher? Yes. Will you wish you hadn't? Yes. With that said. No stall. 3.42 or 73,s on a 4.8 look for something 218/224. In the 550 range with 114 or 115. You'll get torque and drivability with very minimal compromises.

x1000 you want a cam that make tons of bottom end, not alot of overlap, good vacuumm. Remember, its your DAILY DRIVER, you don't want a cam that "Pulls like no other up top"

I daily drive my truck with a big cam. Drivabilty is all in your tune. 20+mpg with 4.56 gears. Think you could handle that?

Again I'm not trying to stear you away from getting a custom grind but, if you're runnin a stock headed motor and just want a sweet bump in performance and sound, an off the shelf cam will do you just fine. Eventually all these "custom grind" cams will be of the shelf cams. There are only so many variations people can come up with to go in a stock motor.

on the shelf cams are just what they are on the shelf, do they perform? yes they do, do they perform well yes, why cause someone somewhere used this cam and it worked well for them, now if a shelf cam would list all mods to make this a proven cam then it would be worth the wild in buying a shelf cam, but sorry they dont, thus we have to search numerous sites to find out what shelf cam would work and work well with our setups and what we want reguardless if its a daily driver or a weekend warrior. i am not knocking shelf cams cause they are proven cams, but its hard to decide whats what if theres no history of that cam working unless like i mentioned you search your butt off on internet sites to find a setup close to yours, the easy way out, custom grind, at lease the person who is specting your cam out will have all knowledge of what you want and what you have in your truck. which will make it proven across the board... pretty damn simple aint it :)


not all cams ( shelf ) works the same even if you do have the same mods ;)
