busted rearend mod!!

well decided to clean up the yukon today wash wax did the roof rack removal mod too which i really like! anyway i went to take some pictures and after i was done i got in and put it in drive and all i heard was "clunk bang skreatch rattle rattle" speedo nailed 120 then the yukon just slowly started drifting. :argg: first thought was the trans went....put it in reverse it would sqeal and catrry on but it would go did that for a few feet stoped and put her back in drive and went on my way maybe 1/4mile and boom peged speedo again and just coasted off the road. i was like 1/2 mile from the house to i just put it in 4hi and went on my way. im gona pull the cover tomarrow and see what all came apart. gona call the shop monday and see how much its gona be if i cant find someone to do it for a good price ill do it or find a used rear foe now....anyway here are the pics :p

haha lol well really the only ones i have done was for my sig pic and the ones the other weekend when i made the video...i dont wanna have to replace tires on this thing often lol so normaly i dont do many or try.

id really like to but that would involve swaping front gears also and so far everyone around here wants a arm and a leg to do diff work on this thing. like 900 in labor

damn! lol if it wasnt my dd i would set it up myself. i did the one in my 82 ta and it has held up great knock on wood just a lil wine on decel after i been hard on it.

You could do the rear first and then save up for the front. Just dont use the 4x4

yeah i thought about that. could i remove front ds on these newer trucks? i know i can on my k10 only reason is so just in case i dont want someone or some reason it go into 4x4 and mess something up bad.

$900 in labor for just the rear? Should be able to get both ends regeared for $900 at a dealer. I would overhaul an entire rear axle (gear and carrier swap, axle bearings and seals, etc.) for less than $300.

Since the speedo pegged 120, it makes me think something has gone wrong with the output of the tranny. Your VSS is back there and that (along with the cluster) is what tells you what speed you are going.

Depending on what happened back there, you might be able to get away with just replacing the carrier. Let us know what you find. Post pics as well.

Wel with it being 4x4 wouldnt the speed sensor be in the transfer case? I know its a diff style truck but in my 86 k10 the speedo cable plugs into the transfer case. Ive HAD to drive it some since the car had a flat and you can hear everthing turning in the rear like ring to pinion gear and like its just spining the carrier so like you said maybe just maybe the unit is bad only but my luck is never that good!

well i got it apart and looks to be only the locker went bad! :) its in tons a pices but i cleaned it out and the ring/pinion looks to be unharmed. with xmas coming up and me in the process of rebuilding the th350 for my k10 i dont think i will upgrade to a true trac yet :( so for now im gona look for a used gov lock to go back in. since im not removing the pinion it will ot be too bad correct? check pattern now then make sure to get backlash set right and same pattern when i set back up? anyway here is the carnage:devil:

Might have been said already but swap your hole front diff for a junk yard 4.10 unit. They are cheaper than a new set of gears and installation is much cheaper. Then get the tru trac with 4010 rears

Since the gears are still good i think for now im just gona replace the locker and do it myself to save some moeny.

Ive got 3.73s and they are still in good shape thank god! I found a complete used rear for a direct swap if needed for 675

That's too much for a stock swap and if you are correct that the pinion bearings and the gear set is OK, it will be very simple for the layman to swap stock diffs. There are no adjustments as long as you use the side bearing shims on the proper side they came out of the housing you are still using and the caps get torqued. It's not the book way, but it is the 98% way.

Totally agree with the above ^

Had to deal with my spider gears going out and the local shop wanted to try quoting me $1200 cause their thieves out here... I marked the ring and pinion location along with mic the shims for reference n kept them on their respective side. No problems or whine luckily for over 40k miles now. :)

OH btw... nice bust ya got there :lol:

yeah i been looking for a replacement unit and found a few in the $100 range.got a guy im gona call tomarrow about putting it in or i may just do it myself.

I went and got my carrierr bearings today! :) friend of mine at the store gave them to me for his cost! Im debating on spending the money on a true track. Found a company on ebay selling them shipped for $405 my question is would i still be ok by just putting it back in with the old shims like they were or if going to a aftermarket diff throw it off that much?

If you replace g80 with g80 you are going to have to replace it again unless you drive like granpa Moses. Wasted money in my opinion.

you will need it set up correctly. Get some one to help you with that. I hear Nathan/GasGuzzler works cheap and does good work.
