I'm looking at getting a tune for my 5.3L and it seems Nelson is the major choice around here. Right now the truck is completely stock with the exhaust hacked off from the muffler back. With the Custom Tune form on their site, do I leave everything blank that isn't stock? Also, the SEL just turned on for the catalytic converters. Would they be able to tune them out so it doesn't throw a code anymore and kill my mileage? What does the dual octane performance tune do?
They can fix the SEL, a dual octane let you run both 87 and 93 it will reference different spark table base on knock depending on octane. I have never really looked at the form(I do my own tuning) your best bet is to call the shop and they will ask you everything they need to know. I would recommend just getting a tune for the highest octane available in your area.
On the form the dual octane is for 87-89 and 91-93, not 87-93. 87-93 would make sense, but 87-89 and 91-93 seems kind of pointless.Quote:

On the contrary the real world only allows for a certain amount of fudge room for learning and there is no way you could have a standard static tune that could get the best performance over the 87-93 range or everyone would get it and there would be nothing else.Quote:

I'm talking about straight from GM. If you run 93 octane it will optimize timing for 93 but probably not as well as if the vehicle were designed specifically for 93 octane. Once you run 89 or 87 octane the computer will obviously detect the predetonation and reduce timing until it runs smoothly. I'm pretty sure someone on FullSizeChevy.com confirmed this. This is the computer age after all, I don't see a dual octane tune being impossible at all.Quote:

Yeah and that vehicle (like my MIL's 07 supercharged GP) is not really optimized for 93, if it were, Dale, Allen, Virgil, whomever would not be able to find 30 HP in it by changing tables and it would rattle itself to death on 87.

I am by no way saying that GM's PCM's are going to be the most efficient and put out the most power. I'm just saying that they will optimize for the higher octane but not fully.
You can, but once you go to WOT with a tank full of 87 on a 93 WOT tune you will have nothing but knock. so to make that work you would have to have two separate tanks one for cruise and one for WOT. So it makes no sense at all to do it.Quote:

Crank relearn can be performed with a tech II or tuning software, its takes about 5 mins to perform.

The local parts store should a tech2 to rent you
I had the crank re-learn done at the local stealership for free, at most they will charge you a small fee. They plug in there tech2 and rev the engine a few times and its over!!! Get the Nelson 93 tune, you will make up the difference of price per gallon with better mpg. It will take a few heat cycles for the pcm to learn, but when it does, Hold on!!!:burnrub:
