Crank Reluctor Ring
Well I just picked up and extra 5.3 that im going to build into an iron 5.7, either to put into my truck or some other project IDK yet. Problem is that the reluctor ring on the crank is jacked up. So do I have to find a new (used) crank or is there a way to replace the reluctor ring on my crank since that is the only thing wrong?
-
The ring is a replaceable item.
-
ok am I going to need a special gm tool to align it on the crank when replacing? and also is it a press fit ring or is it something that needs to be tack welded onto the crank?
-
My understanding of the process is that the ring is heated and slipped onto the crankshaft. The cost of a replacement crankshaft is probably less than the cost of getting the ring replaced unless you know someone who could do the job for you.
-
the alignment and runout of the reluctor ring is critical. It does have to be heated to be installed. An engine machine shop should be able to the installation for you. Some guys have built special fixtures to do this in their shop/garages. You could call your local dealership and see if they know anyone that can do it in the area. Most dealerships that I've dealt with wouldn't do that type of work, they'd just replace the whole crank or engine.

maybe I should just keep an eye out for a crank. ok so since I have to still find a harness and PCM does it matter if i find a 24x, or a 58x crank?
-
the only difference in the two cranks is the reluctor wheel. the wheel is cheap and I know DBRODS has a tool to swap them. get the 24x reluctor since the tuning, pcms and wiring is cheaper to buy for them.
-
thats what this motor had to begin with.. so new ring, get the tool, heat and press?
-
Alignment is critical so be sure you get that correct. Can't have runout either. I have a manual that tells max runout, I'll see if I can find it.

-
I wonder if a GM dealer ship would have that alignment tool?
-
maximum runout is .010", FWIW.

If your doing a 5.7 why dont you just get a 5.7 crank?
-
either way....need the tool/crank it would be cheaper to go with just a new ring, cause the cranks are the same. Although if i went with a 5.7 crank i wouldnt have to have the rotating assembly rebalanced.. Decisions....decisions

Good call. Here's the service information.
"•Use the J 7872 in order to measure the crankshaft runout at the front and rear intermediate journals.
•Use the J 7872 in order to measure the runout of the crankshaft rear flange.
•Use the J 7872 in order to measure the runout of the crankshaft position reluctor ring. Reluctor ring runout should be measured 1.0 mm (0.04 in) below the ring teeth.
If the reluctor ring has runout in excess of 0.7 mm (0.028 in), replace the crankshaft."
No tool number given.

Now that was a GREAT link!
