Hey guys, let's say I buy HPTuners pro edit.. I have a couple of buddies that own silverados and they have some bolt-on's.. Their first choice is to buy handheld programmers.. Let's say they want me to tune their trucks.. How much should I charge them?? I've never done this before but noone else tune trucks around here.. That's why I've been thinking on getting started with that bussines..

Practice on your own truck first and read and read and read then a couple hundred bucks is likely a fair amount.
Yes sir, I will do that for sure.. I will do my homework in my truck.. When I feel ready, go ahead and start tuning someone else truck..
I've heard that there are people that knows how to tune that you can send them the truck info, and they send you a tune and you can install it with hptuners.. Is that right? How much do they normally charge?

A good way to do it is to buy the unlimited license when you tune a vehicle so that you can tune limitless number of vehicles of that type/year model. For a little while you may be doing nothing but paying for licenses but eventually it turns into pure profits.
Thanks Red! Let me get this straight.. Type/year model..? So, if I get a unlimited license for a 2006 silverado as mine, it won't work for 2005 nor 2007 for example? Just 06's?? Or will it work with trucks with the same drive train?Quote:

its year and model specific. 2006 silverado will do all 2006 silverado and sierra, I believe but won't do tahoes and such.

:lol: he speaks the truth. Unless you can get someone that does tuning with HPTuner to show you how to do it, it will take forever to learn. I even bought the Greg Banish book and DVD and still don't know squat. The software does not come with any guides telling you how to use it. Worthless software until you familiarize yourself with it.
Huh! Plus you need to add that English is a 2nd language for me!! Because I speak spanish, and I've been learning english for a couple of years.. I used to be a foreign exchange student in Billings Mt for a year and since there I've been trying as hard as I can to learn it.. So, this will not be an easy ride for me to learn how to tune for sure. I'm telling you because you guys that speak perfect English have a hard time tuning, imagine me.. =s well, "the one who don't risk, does not win" that's a saying we have here in Mx.. Good thing is I live 2hrs from the border with Az & I have a house in Tucson.. I know there are some tuners in Phoenix.. That will help a bit I guess in case I take a weekend of to go and take some tuning lessons.. Do you guys know of any tuning class?? I don't mind going somewhere in the U.S for a couple of days to learn how to tune properly.. (nope, I'm not an illegal immigrant lol I DO have visa and all that kind of stuff) :)Quote:

yeah i think just starting out it shouldn't be about charging for the tunes for your buddies, just let them cover any costs you have to do their truck and let the experience be your pay. When you get confident in your abilities then think about how much.Quote:

And G, that's what I will do! I will explain my buddies how better than any handheld programmer this thing can get someday and hopefully they will help me out, at least pay for the credits for their trucks.. And with some of youguys help & the HPT forum, this will work out good..
So, besides the HPTuners VCM pro edition, and the laptop.. What else will I need to get into tuning?
yea man we split it four ways, since credit are a hundred bucks they can pitch in a 100 bucks to you so you can buy the program, like i said it comes with 8 credits so youll be able to tune thier rides.:thumb:Quote:

A wideband is 100% necessary to do the best tunes, especially if you ever try to tune open loop.

Does the wideband need to be installed in one truck? Our can you move it from one truck to the other? OBDII or what? Cause Ive heard it works with a O2 sensor right? Correct me if I'm wrong.. What's a good wideband kit to get in addition with hpt?
just need to have an 02 port welded into the exhaust of the vehicle you're tuning or buy a clamp on sensor to go in the tailpipe. I use a FAST unit but there are other good units available. Greg Banish, one of the nation's most notorious tuners, uses the ECM Lambda Pro wideband.

The first they thing you must do is learn the scanner that the first thing I did. So when you do make a change you you what to watch. Another good thing is the tune repository NEVER FLASH ONE OF THOSE TUNES IN YOUR TRUCK however it is a good way to see what some people are doing so you get a better idea of what to do. Make small changes that way you can see how thing react to the changes. ASK questions there is no such thing a a stupid question when it comes to tuning, there are more than enough people who are willing to help you. I have only been using HP tuners for little over a year. If you or any one else has a question just ask it the best thing you can do.

I have the NGK and have never had a problem. when i was looking to get one alot of people told me to get the NGK it is the best budget wideband available. check out HP Tuners forum before you buy one.
Yes, reading is one part of it. But another huge part is tuning time. Seat time is more beneficial than reading really. But you have to do the reading part FIRST before you get out there and start modifying tables...Quote:
