need help on my 68 chevy truck lq4 4l80 swap "fuel"

he guys glad to find a site that pertains to what im doing I have a 68 short wide that im building it was intended for a big block but i changed my mind and scored a 02 6.0 and 4l80e. I also got a 02 camaro tank and fuelpump etc. from a ls car i Know the thank will work but I know that the car and truck are different systems so I need some one to walk me through the best option to make it work hopfull with out haveing to use a different pump and stuff. Im planning on haveing wait4u do the wireing. the truck has already got a few mods like the 12 bolt was rebuilt with custom moser axles that have a car bolt patter to tuck the 15 wide dragradials, it has richmond 4.10 and strange mini spool, it has a static drop 6" and i channeled it over the frame 3" so it looks like its on bags, i may have to get them to keep from scraping. front end is all new with cowl hood. and Im doing a custom take on the grill to make it look like a 69 camaro. now all this is a work in progress and beings im a youth pastor i don't get much time for it. I can snap a few pics for you but it very much is in the build stage. most people see it as gutted junk but i know the time and money in it and anone who has done one like this appriciates it to. most dont see 1000. worth or rearend or 1000 worth of suspension and so on thanks for the help..

I did a LT1 swap into a 1966 Impalla with awesome results. That's why I'm now deep into the middle of an LQ9 into my '72 K5 Blazer.
The thing with tanks made for in-tank pumps is a couple of things.
They have baffles in them so as to "trap" some fuel close to the fuel pick-up so in turns and when you have low fuel quantity, you don't get the pump cavitating ( trying to pump air....which you can't....it gets compressed until fluid is pumped again....bad joo-joo)
The second thing is that it's already plumbed for the return and the vent.
Other than that, if you have to you can always regulate the pressure to the/at the fuel rails to your need if you use another set-up ( even with an noisy external pump ).

So do some web searching and you'll get the idea clearly.

Just to clarify, are you asking if the 'maro tank & pump will work with the '02 LQ4 intake setup?

I've personally have never seen a stock tank with a built in baffle... The new ones have a canistor that holds the level constant, but no baffles. I have the cavitation problem in mine if I let it get to 1/4 tank, sucks. One day it will get a cell and fix it though.

Yes they do. 87 was the first year for the TBI, and the last year of the square body regular cab truck. There are not actually "baffles", but more like a bowl around the pump.

Does you engine have a returnless system on it? If not, pick up 04 or newer fuel rails, then you can run a ~99 Vette filter/regulator back by the tank and only have to run one line up to the engine.

I have no idea if it has a returnless system on it or not.

87 should have baffles as it was an FI engine. The 86 was carbed and probably is not baffled as the float bowls in the carb take the place.

Look on the left side of the intake, if there are two fuel lines pointing to the rear, it is not a returnless system. The returnless will have only one line.

Sorry Nathan I just read yours, I was thinking the way ya'll were. '87 was the first year for fi so i figured i thought it had a baffled tank.

Some one needs to look in one to see, Because I gurantee that there are no built in baffling inside the tanks. Basically there are no spot welds or seams on either half of the tank, besides the main one on the sides to connect the top and bottom half. It is physically impossible for one to be stamped into it. They are the same design as the 88-98 tank and same for 99-09 with the exception of these being plastic, yet still no baffles. Every time I build something and we build a cell for it the stock tanks get cut in half and scraped. I have yet to see a built in baffle in any tank. The only thing close to one is in the new GTO's but its just bracing.

Ummm.....almost every stock tank from the 80's 'til now has baffles. They're plastic inside the metal tanks. They're plastic inside the plastic tanks. There are studs spot welded to the inside of the tank and the plastic baffles slide down over them. They're held down by speed nuts. The late 80's t0 early 90's Suburbans had a recall to replace the baffle speed nuts.

Jon, you're not supposed to stick your face in the sender hole and take a big breath before using a match to see inside the tank. :tvhaha:

BTW, on this particular application I was guessing since every house payment making fuel pump replacement I've done has has tank baffles.

Sorry Nathan, the last couple hundred I have messed with, I guess some one stole the baffles out, because I have never seen any...I can take some pics of some tomorrow. I have atleast two 88-98 tanks and six 99-09 tanks and a few ford tanks too....

Wow.....semantics? What are you calling a baffle? Had three out today, two 07's and an '09. Did a resecure on a 1990 Suburban a couple weeks ago. Devilles from 85-93 are known to have them come loose and make the gauge read wrong telling the driver there is more gas in the tank than there really is....causes stalling on turns....

The pair of 87 tanks I've looked in to did. Any reputable parts supplier will sell tanks for the 73-81 model years, 82-86 model years, then an 87 model year fuel injection specific tank. The 87 tanks have a "cup" or "bowl" or "baffle", whatever you want to call it, around the pump to keep fuel held close to the pump.

yeah, both my 92 and 93 had the plastic baffle. Once they crack you have fuel starvation problems with less than 1/2 tank. My 92 was awful, the tank was toast. My 93 isn't much better. :sad:

This is the "Baffle" or Fuel Pump Reservoir in a 1987 EFI pick-up truck Gas Tank. 1986 & Older tanks don't have this in them. Although the tanks look the same...They're NOT.

Here are two tanks that I had laying around in the back one is a 99-06 plastic and the other is a 88-98 tank, not sure on exact years. We do alot of fuel cells. No baffles in these

LOL Jon I believed you. Didn't have to post any pics. That's really weird though. Not sure anyone said all tanks have one. I know most every one I look in has them but I'm not sure I would remember one even if it didn't. I think it would be a good idea to have one if doing a swap....but like I said before and Greg said above, make sure it sits still in the tank or the pump can't keep fed properly.
