truck will not start HELP!!!

well i just fiished putting headers on the 86 silverado and building a y pipe and instaling a highflow cat. i also put in new plugs gapped correctly new wires edelbrock carb and new fuel line with clear filter. well i double checked and rechecked all my plug wires before i even tried to start it up. go to crank and it seems to struggle to turn the motor over. the original started started to struggle and smoke so i put a new one on that i had laying in the building. still the same thing. i went as far as putting the batt in out of my yukon and it will turn over but get to a point like the timing is way off and it will not crank or struggles. anyway im out of ideas and i need to get this truck on the road before next week. anyone got any ideas?http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forums/...lies/dunno.gif

is the carb getting gas?

yup i made sure of that. filter is filling full of fuel carb is squirting. it ran fine before i took the stock manifolds off and changed the plugs/wires.

If your timing was way advanced/retarded to begin with, maybe you are putting number one wire on the wrong post of the distributor.

Did you MARK the distributor as to where the #1 wire came off of it? If not....

I would pull #1 plug, find TDC, pull the dizzy and restab it with the rotor facing the #1 cylinder and then put your #1 wire on that post and go from there. Start from nothing, cause you have too many unknowns.

by chance did you remove the distributor? I have put the distributor in 180 degrees off and cause similar problems.

Make sure the firing order is going the correct way on the dist. You could have the wires going the wrong way...

I believe its something in the wires too. The po that had it replaced the intake gasket at one time and i know that the dizzy was turned more towards the carb than it should be im thinking that maybe its a little off and that he had the wires moved onto diffrent posts for it to work correctly. Any that ive ever done the 8 and 1 wire are the front two on the dizzy and thats the way i reconected them. Im gona go back through tomarrow and move all the wires over one post each way and see if it starts if not ill pull the dizzy and start over. While ive got it out it will be a good chance for me to go ahead and replace the leaky intake gaskets.

pull the spark plugs and crank it. Sounds like you hydraulic locked your engine with fuel or something else possibly.

I may try that it wouldnt hurt i suppose. I just dunno what could have gotten in! I left the breather on the whole time and left the old plugs in just to prevent that.

The timing is wrong.

Pull the cap off, pull out the number one spark plug. Have an assistant tap the key until you feel compression. (this might take a couple trys you need to get the motor close to tdc) with the key off turn the engine clockwise until the timing mark is at zero. Look at the rotor. that is roundabout where the #1 wire has to be.

If it is not where you'd like it now is the time to pull the distributor and clock it acccordingly.

Reinstall cap, wires, and the #1 plug. start engine and time

Its important to keep the engine moving clockwise when turning it w/ a wrench. you dont want to loosen the balancer bolt or take the slack out of the timing chain.

Yeah i was thinking about just starting over since idk how off the po had everything done. Im ju hoping the outer ring on the balancer hasnt slipped over time like the one on my car had and a few other vehicles ive worked on.

well it was what i expected the po had the dizzy in wrong aparently and just rerouted the plug wires to it would run so i pulled it out and set it back in right. she starts right up now! i had to buy a new batt. and some parts for the carb linkage but it wasnt too bad. once i get my vacume gauge back from my buddy at work ill get to tuning it a little better but for now it runs well enough to take it and get it inspected. sounds pretty cool at wot and part throttle with just the high flow cat and some 3in pipe after it but its way too loud at idle and trashy sounding lol.

po and dizzy makes me dizzy bro and I don't knows where CoCo is
