Has anyone done this?
If so how was the overall swap?
Was it a plug and play type swap? What mods had to be done?
Any pics of the completed swap would be cool.
Thanks

Hey, nope dont waste your time on it. Just read on here about the LS swaps. you can go with a 6.0 or even a lsx for the fraction of the price of getting a 454 and you will get a lot more power, an better mpg.
Whats up man. Your truck is sick.
Whats needed for a 6.0 or 5.3 swap?
I'd like to keep my tranny. Would I need new motor mounts?
What about my FI system? I think I read somewhere that Nelson has some harness' to hook it up.
Is this something that could be done in a weekend with the right tools and people?
Thanks man
Thanks,
You will need motor mount plates to adapt everything. The stock v8 mounts work tho. Yes nelson makes a great harness. Just a word of advice, if you have a 4L60E or 65E and you want to go 6.0 please get the 4L80e Transmission. Those trannys are not meant to hold against any power other then stock. Just changing to a k&n air filter puts you at risk of breaking it  You could get a flt lvl 9999 and it wont hold up. As for time. It really can't be done in a weekend. There is a lot of time involved with wiring and fitting everything in.
Nothing like a 454 Vortec for towing.
I own a 2000 3500 lwb regular cab with the 454/4l80e and it tows as well as my 99 Dodge diesel did stock. It will haul an open car trailer and 4000lb car like its not even there.
I dont think u can even compare the 5.3 or 6.0 with the 454 if you are going to tow.U have to do ALOT of mods to the later engines to get them to the stock 440 ft lbs of torque that the 454 is rated.
454 will tow circles around the 6.0 or 5.3....
with the right convertor you can do some bigtime pulling with a small engine.
I am a BBC guy and would not go BBC....even Vortec 454 until at least 8000 lbs of trailer. I'll build a 6.0 that weighs 200 pounds less than a 454 and tows 4000 pounds (which is a light load) with no problem AND drives every day much better if you wanna....
LOL My dad pulls his new travel trailer (Keystone Cougar :naughty: 29FKS) with a newest body half ton GMC 5.3 and the trailer weighs over 6000 dry (add weight for peanut butter and underwear).....and it still gets 10+ MPG on the highway. It's 33'5'' bumper to ball.
The 2 dont even compare when it comes to towing.NO COMPARISON....You certainily dont need over 4000#'s to make a comparison between 5.3/6.0 vs 454 Vortec, you could tell a HUGE difference between the 2 towing a lawn mower trailer, much less 8000#.A stock 6.0 would have its tongue out and wouldnt go over 70mph....
I make that comparison from the 20+ 6.0 3500hd trucks ive driven/towed with and the 2000 454 Vortec truck(old body style) ive had for years....We used to do alot of commercial work and had fleets of both. The 454's were phased out after 1 year because of fuel costs.....
A fair comparison with the 454 Vortec is a lightly modded Duramax,a lightly modded Powerstroke,or a stock Cummins. There are not many gas engines u can compare with diesels when it comes to towing but the 454 holds its own......
I wouldn't even consider a 454 unless you just have a free one laying around. If you want a torque monster big block and still be about to get double digits in fuel mileage I'd look into the fuel injected 555 that Pat Musi and Edelbrock offer. Its going to be pricey but if you really use and work your truck you're going to save the extra money it cost at the pump. They installed this engine in a 66 Chevelle and pulled down 28 MPG on the highway, the engine is incredible.
Any year stock Duramax blows a Vortec 454 out of the water and part of it is the 5 or 6 speed auto but the rest is the power. The 8100 doesn't even compare to the 2001 DMax and it's got 40 more cubes than the 454. Just wait 'til you need a set of injectors on that overheating 600 pound low power behemoth. At some point it will set rich codes and have extended crank due to injectors leaking down into the intake. They're not as much as DMax injectors but they're about $80 each cheapest. The Vortec 454's are extinct for a reason....for almost 10 years.
You might not need more than 4000 pounds to make the comparison but that's about the point a 6.0 starts getting out accelerated all the while still getting better MPG loaded. 6.0's get bad mileage but the 11 you get with one in front of 6000 pounds is a lot better than the 9 you get from a 454 pulling 4000.
Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.
I have to do some searching, found a few places with both 5.3s and 6ltrs.
If thats the case about the tranny, I may just stick with a 5.3.
Figured it would take some time. I have to start doing my homework.
RedHeartBeat,
I saw that on TV. That is exactly what I would do if I had the coin. Sweet set-up.
You're talking about something that they quit making almost 10 years ago and even its way better replacement was outsold 50 or 100 or 200 to one by the Duramax and least that much or most likely more by the 6.0.
You are going backwards to spend the time putting and overweight under performing Vortec 454 in almost anything.
But then again...by all means....have at it.
They quit making LS1 Camaro's,Trans Am's,Grand Nationals, cars with big blocks, and slapped the MCSS and Impala SS badge on pos fwd car's.GM isnt know for doing the smartest things...
Apparently you have never owned a 454 Vortec truck or you wouldnt be talking smack about them.So what if it needs injectors?Just like every other car/truck GM makes, the inj were to small so they need upgraded and they take the same inj's as most 84-2004 cars...Its not the pos spider intake, its a true multi point sequintial fuel injection.
You are right about the 10 year old thing though, then again some of the trucks people are putting the new engines in are even older. My truck was ordered in late 99 as a 2000 model. Its a 2wd single rear wheel long wheel base 3500 with the 454/4l80e,hd cooling/charging and its the old body style(88-98)
Only reason I have kept the gas hog is its TOWING and relibility. And I also own a 495/1050(w/o nos) 99 single rear wheel ext cab Dodge Ram 2500 with the Cummins/nv4500 so its not like its the only thing I have to tow with.....
Ive seen the big blocks for a good bit cheaper than a complete 6.0.Now maximum hp,still retain great gas mileage, and a all around faster better handling vehicle,go with the LS based motor:burnrubb:
Camaros and Trans Ams went out of production because the car itself was a POS, they cost way too much, and anyone that wanted one could not afford the payment much less the insurance. That has nothing to do with the engine.
A FWD new Impala SS stock with put a crappy LT1 94-96 Impala (stock vs. stock) in the weeds, no question.
So what if they ALL need injectors? It's not the flow rate, it's because they LEAK...causing rich codes and extended crank. They're about $1000 per set or more and that doesn't include labor or plenum gaskets to replace them. The injectors are not like any other car or truck. Only the LB7 DMax has a higher injector fail rate. There are 98890760 times more "spider" systems that still work vs. the 90% fail rate of the Vortec 454 injectors. It's pretty much only the 91-94 spider set up that have problems and they're V6's .
There is a reason the newer BBC's cost less. They're for vintage and strip only cars.
$1000 for injectors and r&r?Maybe thats what Billy Bob at the local garage would try to charge a woman who didnt know any better.THEY TAKE THE SAME INJECTORS AS ANY OTHER GM'S!!!
I dont have CHUMP tattooed on my forehead.....U throwing out $1000 has me thinking im trying to have a conversation with a rock....Im done.
No they don't have the same injectors Mr. Rock.
In fact, there is hardly one application that crosses over to another injector wise.....at least since about 1984.
