Nelson Tune

Well, my truck is finally out of warranty and I'm looking to do some more stuff to it. I'm interested in the nelson tune and was wondering out it works. Do I send in my computer, then it gets reprogrammed and sent back. What kind of gains or improvements will I get from it?

They will send you a new PCM and then you send yours back to them.

Every other gm vehicle I buy will get a nelson tune if that tells you anything.

dang, an 04 and just out of warranty, you must not drive alot or guess u bought extended. I am waitin for wife's Hoe to be out of warranty, but not sure if I will make it.

I bought the extended warranty with the truck. GasGuzzler...what do you mean 8/80? 8 year or 80K? Now my questions is what should I get? I don't take it to the track, but I'm wanting more giddy-up. The only thing I'm afraid of is with the NT, do I have a lot more potential of damaging something? I'm a Paramedic so I don't make a lot of $$$ and can't afford to break and engine, tranny, etc.

If you keep everything stock...the more hp, the more potential for breakage. If you upgrade pieces as you go along, you will make everything last longer. A tune by itself is probably no reason for immediate concern...but staying with just a tune will be the hard part. The weak link tends to be the stock 60e...

So what your saying is by getting the NT the stock tranny won't like it much? All I've got on the truck now is Magnaflow catback exhaust and a CAI. Don't really have the time, skills, or access to the tools needed to do more upgrades. Think I should hold off on the NT for now?

No you can do it just tell him to leave your transmission settings alone.

The tune won't break the trans. That comes from "tuners" bumping the trans pressures to the moon for yee-haw tire chirping shifts.

+1...if you stay with just the tune, you will be fine. I loved how much better my truck felt after just the tune...I just couldn't leave it at that...

Changing your tranny fluid often gives the 60E a better chance at life also. :)

Ok. So my Silvy is a 4.8L. Do I need to ask for something specific other than not to change the tranny setting? What's a good fluid to use in the tranny?

Just tell Nelson what you plan to do with the truck and how you run it, he knows how to tune so just make sure to speak up otherwise the closed mouth will never be fed/satisfied... lol

Good fluid... I think most would agree Dexron 3 is all you need (for the 60E anyways), good brands is another thing. Ive never had problems with Valvoline ATF so theres one brand for you lol, rollin over 195k with original 60E (knock on wood for now...). I also run a quart of Lucas stop slip but I think most people avoid additives or something of the such.

When you talk to them about the tune, tell them what your setup is now...not what you hope to do down the road. You'll avoid some heartburn that way...

If they find out and are not customer friendly.

I would only make it an issue if the trans was broken or the PCM itself was at fault.

It's usually a non-issue and it takes a lot for me to say that.

I had a 2001 silvy that nelson tuned well over a year ago, and I had your basic bolt on's. Cai, Tb,tb spacer, wires. I had them firm up the shifts and never had a problem, and I drive my truck hard someties. My current set up is Cai, E-fans, 180 t-stat, 80mm tb, granetelli maf, and granetelli wires. I had my Nelson tune set up for all of that plus the trans go hd-2 trans kit and the Corvette servos. All the work is done and boy does she hit gears in a good way now. I can chirp second with my 275/60/17 tires with my 4.8L. Just be easy on your truck and don't drive it like you stole it all the time and it will hold up. Gears and a converter is next on the list for me, and I am sure it will be even better. Good luck on your project...... Mark

have you ran yours at the track? we're pretty close in mods, i think my4.10s make up for your TB, MAF and wires. are you going with 4.10s? you really should

so do the guys at nelson have a habit of not calling back?

i'm working on finding all the parts for a 5.3 swap & found out what a pain my harness is going to be to find & thought of getting them to make one. i've called them for 2 days & the best i get is the lady taking my name & number... again.

Their not Jegs or summit. They are a really busy shop. Just try to call again and PM Mel on here. That will usually work.

To answer your question, we don't have a list of 5.3L parts list for your swap, your best bet is to use the search feature and check out all the great swaps that have been done by members on the site!

Melissa can answer your questions, she's a knowledgeable lady that is into trucks just as much as guys (you) are! If she doesn't know the answer, she'll find it for you.

Use the resources that are available to you now, and later ask specific questions that you can't find on the site.

i know the parts i need... i just didn't know if i had to have a specific harness for my application - i don't just have your run-of-the-mill 2wd 4L60. they cleared that up for me.
