Fuel pump problems
Every once and awhile when I go to start my truck it wont start. Everything comes on except for it wont start. But it's only with an aftermarket key It never happens when I use my gm key but the dealership refuses and says their key is good it's the fuel pump..... Neither one of my keys will open the driver door either. That never happened until I had the key cut
-
Well turn the key, but not to the on position, and if you hear the fuel pump prime up or making a whirring noise like its on, then its not the fuel pump
-
Yeah I already did that and the fuel pump is working fine. I haven't noticed any of the problems that I have ever had with a fuel pump. I changed my fuel pump so often in my '94 I cut a hole in the bed. In the '94 my sending unit always went out first and I couldn't tell how much gas was in it. Like I said I have had no problems with my original key.
-
Does your key have a diode chip in it?
-
no it doesn't have a chip but I find it weird that I have no symptoms of a fuel pump going out except when I go get a key cut using that key my pickup doesn't like to start everyonce and awhile. never had any signs of problems with the original key. I may be mistaken but I'm a betting man and I go all in on the key
-
Nope. Key doesn't matter at all in 03 IF it turns. Does the key turn? The sensor in the column needs to see rotation of the cylinder but the key itself just needs to satisfy the tumblers. Fuel pump bleed offs are common and can cause extended crank starts.
The keys not opening the doors may be a different issue.
-
Well at first the key wouldn't work at all. The parts guy went and shaved more off using my old key as a guide then it started. I just found it weird that the only time I have the problem is when using the old key and it hasn't happened since or prior. I threw the key away
-
I had a '94 and I had several Like more then 20 fuel pumps go out I don't know if it was a manufactorer issue or bad gas clogging it up. first went the sending unit. I couldn't tell how much gas was in it. the guage always said full. I cut a door in the bed I got sick and tired of dropping the tank. just knocking out all the options before I do it in the '03

It seems that I found a GM Mechanic about an hour and a half away to take my truck too for future issues though :deal:
-
The key turns all the electronics come on the seat positions and not even a crank. I was wondering if it may also be a hot starter.
heres what I did...I lost a set of keys. I was at the mall. Decided that since it'd be real easy to click the fob and find the pickup in the parking lot I'd pull the fuse to the starter and disconnect the battery until I went and got my other set at the house
-
Just wondering by "no start" you mean key won't turn. I can put in a pump or code and replace a cylinder. LOL
-
oh no the key turns and nothing happens
-
Hey Nathan did you read the last one I wrote on the 1st page. It explains when it started.
-
No starter either? Nothing happens at all?
-
No sir thats what confused me I mean you already know I don't know my head from rear on this motor but in older ones I kinda figured I could narrow it down. I mean i've had fuel pumps go out before and I'm pretty sure this is not a fuel pump issue
-
More likely an ignition switch or starter then?
-
Thats why I say its the key....It's been almost a year since I've had this problem. It would happen ever three or four days and since I don't use that key and haven't had the problem since but i want to make sure I guess that i'm not mistaken
-
If i turned the key about 20 times it finally started but like i said would happen one time out of like 40-50 starts with the fresh cut key
-
I assumed it was the key, ignition or maybe the starter was getting hot. I've had a starter get to hot in my '85 and man in the texas heat it would take hours to cool down and start. but why only that one key. I mean thats all I can figure. They said my fuel pump didn't pressure up fully. I'm sure it didn't it has 103,000 miles chevy fuel pumps in my opinion suck. but why only that one key man
-
Chance? Are going to bring it over or not? If it's not easy to make it fail the 82 minute drive might be a waste.
-
Im going to start using that cut key again and see if I can get it to happen. I think you're right that if I try and make it happen and take it, that it wont do it. weird how that works
-
I couldn't have hurt anything by pulling that starter fuse right?
-
Except it won't start without the CRANK fuse.
-
i just pulled out the one that says starter put it back in before I started it. I figured they've got my keys. I can disconnect the battery but then anyone could reconnect it. but no one carries that kind of fuse around haha

Hopefully the only thing I'll ever have to take it in for is a cam or something more for my $
