Quick question about a/c compressor

I have a used a/c compressor I bought back when I bought my truck. Other than just putting the new one on and charging the system, is there anything else that should be done to the system, or the used compressor?

I'm all so attempting to chase down some random noises I've got. I don't know if anyone remembers, but a few months ago I was having something that sounded like engine knock, and a constant rattle. The rattle is from the a/c compressor (its done that since the truck was a few years old), the knock I think I've narrowed it down to the idler pulley, or the small pulley on the water pump. Does the knock sound coming from there seem to make sense, the sound doesn't increase frequency with engine speed.

Some 02-04's had a compressor problem that made a knocking noise from the compressor trying to compress liquid refrigernant. Also make sure the fan clutch is working properly. If it's not the high side pressures can get too high and cause noises.

+1 on what he said! i replaced my idler pulley and my tensioner pulley before finding out that the aggrivating noise was the fan clutch. .. e-fans FTW!

. . .btw if your going to change compressors i would recommend getting the system vacumned and replacing the accumalator just to be safe and keep your new compressor from getting locked up and especially change that stupid cabin air filter and you will be surprised how much it will affect your airflow!! just my :twocents:

Just depends on what year it is. No cabin filters 03+.

This is a 99. For some reason I don't think it has one.. but never tried to look though.

With flushing, does the condenser get flushed? Or is that something that has to be replaced too?

yes it would. . . but everyone is entitled to their own opinions and i was taught that on the new type condensors the passages are so small that sometimes a flush can just cause all the debris to be lodged into one spot. . .but thats just an opinion and obviously it still works for some people or otherwise they wouldnt do it!

but i really wouldnt worry about the condensor being filled with contaminants if anything were to be filled with debris it would most likely be the orffice tube . . .plus thats a LOT cheaper :burnrubb: . . .once again just my :twocents:

I tend to agree. I'm not into flushing AC systems anyway. If there is enough debris in the system NOT caught by the orifice screen the component in question needs replaced. If the orifice screen isn't super clogged (like so bad it's the same diameter as the inside of the pipe it goes in) then a compressor and orifice tube will do the trick. I also don't like replacing the accumulator just because the compressor is replaced. If the system has been open a long time or a lot of times over and over then maybe so because it contains a dessicant that absorbs moisture from the air. Multiple compressor replacements without proper oil balancing procedure can make the accumulator get too full of compressor oil too but that's an extreme case.

what cone killer said. Take out orifice tube and flush that puppy out!!! Go both ways, backflush, up in the condensor, out the evaporator, any way you can flush it, do it. Look up the specification on amount and type of oil for your a/c system. Put a little in your compressor(so it is sure to have oil in it). Button it all up with new o-rings, and vac it down. The more air you get out, the better. Let the oil & 134a suck down, enjoy!!!

When you replace your compressor, be sure to add compressor oil, as needed. Also, be sure to find and replace your oriface tube. It is the filter that catches the debris you are worrying about.

Its being replaced because the one on there now, rattles like a crazy thing then its running, actually sounds like its about to just pop (but its been like that for a long time and hasn't died yet), everyone who has worked on the truck they say its the compressor clutch that's having problems. just getting tired of having to recharge it when I don't use the system for more than a week.

The leaking might not even be from the compressor, but its due to be changed, I'm really not into running things till it breaks, when you know its bad, because you might cause more problems from waiting...

let me be your guniea pig by saying once you add oil to your new compressor TURN THE PULLEY BY HAND!!! I was fortanute to find out that the oil that was in the compressor was obviously sitting on top of the piston and my gauages started fluttering like a hummingbird as soon as it kicked on so much for those reed valves!!. . . .just some advice :argg:

Most can't be turned by hand and there are even stickers on them saying so. The reed valves are why some of the 02-04's rattle and blow the freon out the back.
