Got the Truck tuned .... Well kinda

Well, got tot Nelson performance this morning and Allen begins to work his magic. Everything was going good when the the ticking came back. He got the tune solid up to 7psi, after that it started cutting out. Looks like the lifter from hell is back, I just don't get it. Well on the way home I was super pissed so i started really beating on it. It stopped cutting out at 7 and is hitting 10 no problem. Still have the ticking so it looks like i get to pull the heads again. Any ideas what would kill a new lifter that fast.

my motor ticks like that from the lifters. been making same noise for past 4k. not less no more. i run thicker oil and it seems to help quiet it some

What oil are you running? FWIW, Mobil 1 makes my brothers 4.8l tick and Castrol GTX doesn't. Maybe you somehow developed an oil restriction to one of your lifters???

The tick gets pretty loud, definitely not normal.
Maybe you cleared the plugs out.

Since we didn't get to 10psi, be sure the a/f ratio is ok, i'm sure it is.

get louder exhaust, ticks all go away! for real though sorry to hear, throw a fresh set of plugs in it and check all the plug wires close, i had the same cutting out and it turned out to be a cut in the wire boot

Wow, and those are new lifters? Which ones?

Are you soaking the lifters in oil for a bit before installing them?

yup soaked them over night in the oil i use. Gonna pull the valve cover and the rockers and find witch one it is. The lifters are the LS7's

Well its 4'' exhaust with a 4 1/2'' diesel magnaflow muffler. (straight though design.)

take the muffler out!! if you still have the tick its not loud enough!!!! :LOL:

was the cam damaged when your lifters failed? a damaged cam can kill the lifters quick.

After you mentioned that my bro in law decided to do a compression test on the #5 cylinder. That should help find the source right. Thats were the lifter was bad. So we checked it and he said it hit 60psi and leaked down, but he wanted me to see it and then it hit 150 and held fine. Hmmm. I just wish I knew what killed a brand new lifter that is suppose to be better than what was already in there. Then next step in lifters it the cts race lifters that run 250-280. This is gonna kick my ass.:smash:

man, i think you have another issue. I just cant see it killing lifters like that w/o a reason..... I still have stock 6.0 lifters in my motor. I just dont know what it is....lol... i know a lot of help.

any chance that it could be a problem with a valve? The Valve springs looked good, none broke or anything. push rod's all looked straight. I didn't see one that was bent so went with them. Wheres greg i wish he would chime in.

Might pull the spring, put some tight fitting hose on the valve, and remove the air. Use the hose to hold the valve. Feel for rough spots in the guide, excess guide wear, spin the valve against the seat feeling for rough spots, spin it to see if it's bent.

Mark, is it the same lifter set (#5) every time?

All 16 of mine tick and the injectors click and clatter like an old sewing machine. :laugh:

not sure yet, sounds like the same spot. Just let the truck get warm and run for 20min and no tick. :confused: I am gonna run around in it to day and see what it does. I will just watch the A/f really close.

I have lifter ticking as well. Some times the lifter tick really loud and then go away.

by any chance did the lifter spin in the holder last time?

I cant really say. But the lifter cup/trays looked ok, i didn't see any cracks to speak of.

of course you say that now where were you a week ago before the swap, thanks homie.

like i said my motor makes a similar noise. i just did the typical check up on it and all check out good. its a bad lifter and mine is up front on passengerside

Well, I guess it was an assumption that you do that when you replace lifters. A metal piece being retained by plastic? Come on Marky Mark! Its like going though and replacing the brakes on one side of the car, when it is common knowledge that you replace the brakes on both sides... No worries man.

gotta remember this is my first rodeo with LS internals.

Well someone on PT brought up the oiling system for the lifters and that it might be clogged? Can one of my friends over here give me some insight on that? Could the Push rod be clogged. I didn't check that.

The lifter oil the push rod so I don't think a clogged p/r would hurt the lifter.
