Backlash set right?
yeah somethings not set right, take it apart and do it again until you hear no whining
Dont drive it till you take it back apart. You dont want to have to buy another gear set.
yeah that would be the gears not the truetrac
did you happen to install gear oil?
is it whining all the time or just at 55-60mph
Yep. Need more info.
I didnt install it i got a local mechanic to do it. I have talked to many people hes did ring and pinion for and they said they never had any problems but you never know but he has changed it out 3 or 4 times tryin to get the right shim to work then he told me he used a dial indicator to set pinion depth and used the #s on the back of the pinion to find the size shim to use. I know if a rearend is set up right it dont make noise so somethings wrong?
The wining noise is constant on and off the gas it does get louder the longer you drive it so i got it parked until i can get someone to look at it.
Yeah thats the gears for sure. Mine did the same thing
My gears whine too, they get loud at 55-60 and all the guys i know around here with gears thiers whine too, i wouldnt worry to much about it. unless the whining is comin from somewhere else.
Gears shouldn't whine if they are installed correctly. They will wear out quick if everything isn't set right. IMO, I wouldn't drive it until someone fixed the issue.
Whining under coast or accel is usually bearings, whining at steady speeds or very gradual decel/accel is usually gears and/or set-up.
Some after market gears are more apt to make noise than others. May be normal.
There is a difference between....
"my gears whine and haven't flown out of the axle in X amount of miles"
.....and
....what is correct.
They should be quiet if set up properly. That is perfect world though and some aftermarket sets make noise with no reliability issues. The Richmonds in my Chevelle were quiet but everyone I knew with Zooms made noise.
mine were installed properly if not pretty sure they woulda went kaboom, sometimes i get irritated by the crap that spews outta people.
No, not so much. They can have a side bearing preload out of spec or a crush sleeve not done exactly right....lots of other things too like pinion depth, rotating torque, pattern off....all of which could cause a noise that would never make it fly apart.
Well i took it to him today and go it back this afternoon he said he adjusted backlash and put on a new pinion bearing. I drove it for a while this afternoon and no noise at all i was very glad!!! I was bout ready to ring his neck!
good news, glad it is fixed
My only point is that sometimes people think that just because they go with a different, heavier, stronger or aftermarket gear that it is supposed to make a little noise. Then they end up driving around for a little while and it goes boom. Glad yours is working out for you G and glad the OP got theirs fixed.
