also, can those things clear codes as well, or only read them?
i know they're pretty expensive, like 1k or something from what i heard

you can buy them from $30 on up.
OBD I & II Scanner & Reader, scanner actron code reader, actron cp9125 pocketscan, cp9145 , cp9150, scan tools.
they have some good prices.
A code reader is useless without proper diagnostic information, knowledge, and equipment. Don't pay much for one.
ok well lemme say why i want one (its actually more for my dad)
we have been having an ongoing problem with his emissions codes coming up. if we can reset it every time he gets an inspection, it will be alot cheaper than trying to get it fixed every year.
I may be wrong on this but even if you reset the emission codes, there are monitors that still have to be reset. I think the only way to reset them is to drive so many miles at certain speeds. The only thing the scanner will let you do is clear the check engine light but the monitors will still be tripped and seen by the inspector. Hopefully someone else can chime in and correct me if I'm wrong.
yeah, OBDII inspections require about a 50 mile drive cycle after clearing codes before the emissions inspection will pass.
This is true. Time and distance (as well as number of cold starts and drive cycles) makes a difference on when the IM flags reset.
Get HP tuners, if you really want a scanner that bad might as well and get a tuning program while your at it, its all in one!
yeah true, oh well just looking for a cheap way around it.
thanks for the help guys!
