really they have been talking about this for years but the way things are going we wont a have v8 ever again :(
I almost cried. It was supposed to be my truck when i graduated. I was telling everyone.
by next year there might not be a gm period:D
ouch.......The entire diesel dept. at TSTC just cried a little. . . thanx GM for ruining rednecks and enthusiast lifelong dreams :( haha
It's get rid of some stuff, or go under.
agree 100% but its get rid of the right stuff hummer and saturn were a good start i think but if they are forced to make the volt it will not sell and i know they dont want them to make suburbans and trucks but thats what Americans need and if the dont make them by by gm
i think everyone agrees they need to restructure in order to survive...but i dont think the gov should be telling gm what and who they get rid of...this isnt the USSR
that blows, really wanted to see what that 4.5 would do in a rcsb
Didn't I hear or read GM had to drop Nascar sponsorship also?
I completely agree...except for the part where US taxpayer dollars are floating them right now. Because of that is the reason the gov't gets to make stipulations.
Healthcare and Unions are what is killing GM. Those are crazy contracts & costs they have to pay right now. If they don't restructure or eliminate them, no amount of money will help. They simply are spending more than they bring in.
Just a matter of time IMO.
That just drives me bonkers. Honestly, the government shouldn't be giving them any money and sure should not be telling them what to. I feel for anyone who works for these companies and might loose a job, but it happens. If GM wants to stick around they should just buckle down and start making good vehicles again.
Car and Driver played a horrible April Fools joke and stated that Obama forced GM and Dodge out of NASCAR to save money. I chuckled a little
Saturn is the only brand owned by GM that has not seen a decrease in sales (maybe in 08, not sure). My wife had an ion and it gave us no problems but we traded it in for the Vue in my sig. I love it. It has lots of power. If anything, Hummer is more worthless. One of the biggest under powered gas wasters on the road.
Big mistake on GM's part. At this point the GM I knew and was fond of is dead... Soon, they'll be a Toyota clone.
Chapter 11 bankruptcy is the only way out, it allows them to cancel any contracts and completely restructure the company. Simply put - the unions outta there. Why wouldn't they get rid of there interest in Saab?
I say they need to get rid of hummer and saab. Maybe even Saturn, even tho I hear they make a bunch of money for them but I'm not a big fan.
the union isnt the problem. first of all cuz gm has to agree on the terms of what they are going to pay the union. one of the biggest mistakes gm made was getting rid of the union workers who made steering wheels and door panels. they outsourced that work cuz the company they out sourced to came in and underbid the union, gm took the bait fired something like 3500 people. then the company they outsourced to tripled they're price. and unions arent going anywhere while that obama guy is in office. democrates are all about unions. i agree that the union workers were paid too much but gm agreed to pay em that much and would you say anything if you were making a crap load of money for doing somethingyou can do with your eyes closed. NOPE.
so dont go blaming this on the union worker. it all boils down to bad desicions made by the heads of gm. and the union workers arent going anywhere even if they restructure which im sure theyre gonna do. the union workers have the power if they get rid of the union that means they have to fill those seats immediatly with skilled workers. and if they hire some jackass off the street who's gonna train them, no one cuz gm fired the union guy that trains the unskilled workers.
I say get rid of hummers, or put em' in cereal boxes for free
I agree, but when someone tells me I have to do something, that makes me not want to do it
Thank the banks, the UAW, and the higher up's in GM.
BTW, all Saturn vehicles are now reskinned regular GM products. There is no difference any longer other than the name.
Effin A! That pisses me off, cause I was 100% getting a 1/2 ton Baby Duramax for my next truck...
My opinion is that with the government being nice enough to go out an bail these guys out (which was partly their fault), they need to get lean and mean with the company operations and trim some fat. Saab is worthless. GM was only using them at having another iron in the fire. GM needs to get rid of Saab period.
As much as I'd hate to say this, GM needs to get rid of Hummer too--only because the brand is hurting GM's goal of meeting the EPA's mpg standard standards. Like Saturn, most of Hummer's products are rebadged and slightly retooled already produced GM drivelines, but Hummer is not necessary.
I do think GM should keep Saturn because of the potential help to meet mpg standards. The government would be more apt to letting GM keep the Saturn brand because it would help GM meet their standards for vehicle fuel efficiency. With Saturn's vehicles being "reskinned" platorms GM already makes, Saturn isn't needing to take a lot of GM's money for them to operate.
I also think GM needs to trim the fat in the upper management's salaries, company embellished services, and the Union's BS. I am with Devin--Chapter 11 needs to happen so they restructure contracts--which means the Unions are gone.
In order for GM to have their trucks get better mpgs--they NEED to continue production of the 1/2 ton diesel--along with a beefed up 2-mode Hybrid, which is the same system that is used in the Escalade. The combo of the two would yield 20+ mpgs city and 20+ mpgs hwy.
I have one word. Communism
I have some other words--GET RID OF THAT SUPREMELY GAY AVATAR.
+++1 on the chapter 11 the union has GM by the sac right now not totally the government and even though its partly GM's fault for giving them so much money in the first place the only way out is to file bankruptcy with any hope of running a successful company. . . .i say boo to GM :( get smart fast so maybe one day i can buy a new shiny bowtie for my kids lol
go outa biz so in 10 years i can sell my truck for 100 grand
The 2-mode doesn't help at all with MPG on the highway, it only helps stop and go MPG.
The Hummers are all gay and so is a half ton with a diesel. If we have learned anything from the last 4 years it's that diesels are a huge problem. It makes no sense to spend 30% more for a vehicle to get 6% better fuel mileage especially when the maintenance costs twice as much and the fuel is 10% more per gallon. Diesel customers are the hardest to deal with and so are their trucks.
It would have been cool to have diesel years ago in a half ton truck, but now that diesels are EPA regulated, screw that!
30% more!!! The Denali cost 50000. I saw a 6.6L dmax for 45000. I would rather save the extra 5 gs and have an engine ad trans combo that can handle the beatings of a lifetime. Besides, most people that own diesels use them for hauling cattle and farm equipment. But the commuter DD diesel is spreading like wildfire. Basic maintenance is more expensive but it is also half as often. And most diesels powertrains dont need major repairs for several 100k miles. Newer diesels also cause less emissions than gassers and get better mpgs (so the dems can shut their d@$% mouths). In most European countries, diesels are the standards. Our government is just too stupid to make the change.
Yes, a RC 2500 gas is around $30K with no options. Add the diesel and auto (like 957 out of 1000 are) and the price jumps to over $40K.
My Denali stickered at $51K. I bought it at almost 5 years old with only 68K miles for $16K. I have nothing in it. There is no comparison other than it tows just about what a 2500 6.0 does from 2003 and is a lot nicer. Most people that own Duramax's tow a bass boat that my Blazer with 212K miles can tow...if they tow at all. BTW, I'm rural and am near the largest (money wise) quarter horse region in the nation, one of the largest (by land production) regions of oil and gas industries, as well as cattle, farm, and ranch.
Basic maintenance on a light duty diesel (one ton and less) is between four and five times more expensive and needs done at half the interval so you save negative two and a quarter times the money  Add the fact the fuel costs more than MPG savings gives you and it's very obvious that the only good market for a light duty 350-400 HP, 600-650 TQ diesel is a business owner that has its own shop for maintenance and plans to tow/haul at least 70% of the time while keeping each unit for at least 200K miles.
I understand what you are saying, why would a guy who works at some office need a 6.6L diesel to tow around a 500 pound trailer grille or whatever. I agree. No one needs that. But people are willing to spend the money. These are things that got us in this financial mess. I am willing to spend the money on a smaller diesel, but i am gonna use it to its potential.
