I'm HIGHLY considering regearing this Z I have here to 4.56:1 gears with the 33" tires. That'd give me about 2300-2400rpm @ 70mph. Do you guys think that is too high for a cruise RPM?
Now I'm at a poor 1800rpm with my 3.73:1 gears. My truck drags on the freeway and around town.
What does everyone think? I found someone locally that will help me install the gears (front, rear, and Eaton for about $150/axle!) too.

that will work...i got 373 gear and i criuse at 2250 rpm at 70 and 2450 at 80 so it doesnt hurt your motor.will only hurt you wallet cause you will get down to about 12 mpg at that rpm.
I have the 3.73s and I cruise all day at that RPM. I even average 19-21 MPG.
Yeah I see my MPG going up. I never cruise faster than 70mph in the truck...it's a brick. My RPM is too low at cruise.
Currenty I average 15.5-16.5 mpg and just under 20mpg on the freeway cruise at 70mph.
these 6.0's dont get shit for mileage..best i got was 16.0 and that was on long haul with cruise control on 70.if i cruise 75 to 80 it goes to 13.5mpg quick.Quote:

rule of thumb...it takes more rpm's to get more hp...it takes more gas to get more rpm's....more rpm's you cruise at ..the more gas you gonna burn. :duh:
....unless you are below the torque curve. If you run below the power curve you could actually get worse gas mileage.

the 6.0's get the best gas mileage at 60mph, but who can go that slow these days?
had a 2000 ecsb w/ 4.8 and 3.42's...was the best damn truck i ever had for gas mileage...20 all the time on the hiway runnin 70 to 80mphQuote:

I went 300 miles - 2 weekends ago and use less then a half a tank
I felt that was pretty good
All highway
Cruise set right at 75
I did not check the MPG
I also have a 91 350 TBI 700r4 and have regularly knocked down
20 & 21 MPG - cruising at 72 mph
Lots on mods.
i have 4.10s in mine, and if i drive 75, then my rpm's are at about 2500... from what i remember and i get 19 mpg on the highway.
It's the 5.3 honestly it should have came with a 6.0 from the factory in the 4x4...it's just too small of a motor to move all that weight about.Quote:

yea...a buddy of mine has an 01z with the 5.3 . pullin the boat..the motor really works too hard and stays hot..he is gonna put a 6.0 in it soon...Quote:

6.0 HO heads with cam
Build a 9:1 comp 6.0 out of a core motor for cheap (stock crank and rods) then get a used ATI for it.
I just don't know which setup would be better
