I know in Texas you are allowed to carry a loaded handgun in your vehicle providing you are "traveling." I dont however have a clear answer to whether the gun must be in plain sight or concealed somewhere in the vehicle, I would assume concealed though :nutz:
Got a long road trip this weekend to places not exactly known as friendly and just want to be on the safe side as for protection and the law.

IMO get a CHL and dont worry about it.
Im not up to date on 2009 yet but...
the way the new law was written last year, if you are in your car/truck then you are traveling and therefore allowed to carry. you dont need a concealed license. now, will a cop abide by this new law? well, good luck.
bottom line: it is legal, but if your trip is not next week, try to get a chl just in case.
Thanks guys, really trying to avoid the CHL as alot of people view it as just another means of them keeping up with who has what. I dont really have a need to carry outside of traveling, but I will probably ending up taking the course anyway just so I have a better foot to stand on if I do get pulled over.

GEt your CHL! I've had my for 8 years now and "It's better to have it and not need it then, Need it and not have it". Everyone should get a CHL it are right to carry....
Put it out of sight (more than just the glove box or under the seat) but somewhere you can get to it.

With a CHL comes more responsibility to the handgun carrier. Use the travelers self protection law and forget getting the CHL. Take a gun safety course if you don't know it already.

You are right. Personally I think that even if he just takes the course, but doesnt get the CHL he will be better off. Because the CHL class will teach you exactly what the laws are and how they appply to you.Quote:

No matter what the law reads you will always have the chance the cop just does not know or does not care. Traveling is such a broad term anyway. But I am no law office understanding person, got pulled over for tires too wide once. Had to wait 45min, while the cop looked through the book.. I tried telling him its not wide law, its how far off the body lines. Still took 45min. to get told, Iwill let you off this time. LOL

Take the CHL training and they will explain to you the responsibilities you carry along with the license. Accountability weighs heavily on the possessor of a CHL.

You can have a gun in the car and at home with no CHL and that's our last bit of ability. Use it. The downsideSSS of a CHL are obvious to those who THINK.

We're talking about carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle here, presumably for self defense. The laws governing the use of deadly force in the state of Texas apply equally to all citizens regardless if you are a CHL holder or a non-CHL holder. I know when I can use it and when I can't, thats my responsibility as a CHL holder. I don't understand the logic behind a CHL holder being more accountable than anyone else when it comes to the use of deadly force. I can only guess that you're referring to how a jury might perceive a CHL holder vs. a non-CHL holder in the event of a civil lawsuit? If thats the case let me know and I will elaborate.

You cant get your CHL overnight. I know people who have waited weeks to get it. But, go ahead and get your course out of the way. I carry since I was almost carjacked when in my truck.
