what all is involved in doing a crank relearn? i tried to search it but didnt come up with anything. :doofus:
i think its just in the dvt controls in efilive... just click the reset button, i don't know about other tuners/tech 2s. if you don't have any tuning stuff take it to a dealer i think they will do it with a tech 2 for free.
i dont have any sort of tuning stuff, but a dealer can do it for free??
Its On Nelsons Site Under Faqs
is that to do the crank relearn? i thought you had to do something that required some sort of computer stuff for the crank relearn?
we can fix it at the track if you can stand looking at the light that long
my dad really wants me to get it fixed. so i was gona get nelson to send me a new pcm and melissa told me i would have to do the relearn.
Takes about 26 seconds with a TechII if the engine is warm and your lighter fuse isn't blown. Did it for free for a Denali forum member a couple months ago. I'll do the CKP relearn for free for anyone else here too if I eventually get a free tune for my Blazer from Allen for it....LOL
how much would a dealership usually charge for a crank relearn?
I bet they'd pull your pants down if they didn't know you. Most shops have a minimum diagnostic fee (yes, I know....don't start) of 1.0 labor hour. Retail hourly rates vary from the mid $50's to $140+. Sorry I couldn't guess better.
and my engine wont start till i do this relearn?
Sure it will. Might run a little ragged, might be a little rough or set misfire DTC's falsely....might get crappier MPG....might set an SES light. It needs done but that alone will not keep it from running.
i guess my dad can just wait till i go to the meet then! i cant pay for the dealership to do this just so i wont have a light on
It will eventually go out but I would eventually have the CKP (CASE) learn done.
right now its just on because i go my cats and rear o2's take out today
beware though, if you go to long without resetting it it will run like total ass, there will be some nasty ticking/knocking/funny noises. ask 6.0vortecchevy about it lol.
ive got a live tune with Allen scheduled for the monday after the meet, is that too long?
Post up here and PT.net for someone with HPTuners software and see if they will do the case learn for you. It takes a few minutes and then you're done. Costs them nothing. Buy them a 6 pack or a case of soda or something for doing it. Surely someone near you has HPTuners software.
Why not just do what it says to do on Nelsons site??? Takes about 30 min...and your done...do it yourself...
Isn't that the security relearn, not the CASE?
can someone answer me this.....why do i hear about crank relearn alot of times all with other tuners touching PCMs?
just curious cause ive swapped Pcms in many vehicles and have tuned my truck plenty of times and never had this problem.
ive used my pcm in other vehicles and never had an issue...Im just curious to this as why this occurs
i thought it just happens after a cam swap...
PCMs are reloaded with a completely new operating system install(flash), never been on a vehicle since loading the operating system. Its like installing a brand new PCM on a vehicle. It has to be syncronized once and then its golden until the PCM is wiped clean and another operating system is loaded.
why would you switch the os though? i know there are some custom os available but i thought they are mainly for ease of tuning with boost.
when you order a PCM you get a replacement PCM tuned with an updated program for your vehicle. Say you have a 411 PCM, they have a pile of them they use to program and performance tune for your vehicle. There is no telling what the PCM came out of. It may be a V6, V8, van, truck, car... so the operating system is loaded. It would be different if you were there and he could tune on your pcm or you had HPTuners software and you could download your tune to your PC and then send it to him for updates and then you reload. No issues then.
so what your saying is cause they arent the OEM pcm it has this issue then?
now answer me this...why can i take my pcm from my truck and install it in another given vehicle and it runs with no crank relearn?
because it has had a case learn cycle done on it in its past. It thinks its still in the same truck, bubble memory. The odd thing is not all new pcms need it done. I guess it has something to do with data without acceptable parameters in the base GM tune vs things outside the limit.
i wonder if it has to do with how some "tuners" set the pcm's up
i took a 00 2500 computer and rewrote it for a 99 fbody and had no issues with it. wouldnt that be the same as you been trying to speak on?
did you have the PCM flashed? I know you can't simply write a fbody tune onto a truck PCM without having it flashed, different OS, at least I'm 99% sure. There are a lot of different operating parameters between the two systems. I know you can use a truck pcm to run a fbody and visa-versa.
I'd say it's because a lot of tunes disable misfire diagnostics....it's the only thing the CASE is for....to properly determine misfires.
When the reluctor, crankshaft, CKP sensor, or PCM is replaced, the specific PCM in that specific vehicle needs to "know" the "normal" deceleration rate of the rotating assembly. This is how misfire diagnostics work. The PCM knows of a misfire when the programmed (CASE) deceleration rate does not match the actual deceleration rate. The PCM is looking at super-rapid RPM flucuations that occur under normal, non-misfiring running conditions. When a misfire occurs, there is a lull in the spikes of RPM. The PCM sees this as misfire. Without a CASE learn (when misfire diagnostics are enabled), the PCM can set misfire flags when there is no misfire or NOT set a flag when misfire IS occuring. Disabling misfire diagnostics makes CASE not needed.
well, i just got the computer so i called a couple dealers to try to get the relearn done. on wanted $100, so screw them. the other seemed like he had never heard of a crank relearn and told me i would just have to stop by and they could see what they could do. im gona try to find someone around here that has HPTuners and hopefully they can help me out!!!
you have to keep in mind im in south alabama right now -- redneck country:badteef:
and look in my "exhaust leak" thread to see what the dealership that didnt know what i was talking about did. im sure it will make you proud to work for the same people as those guys do!!
I don't work for anyone but Charles Brown...... and my wife of course.
Hey nate just curious, think its necessary to do the crank relearn on my truck when I visit Allen for the SD tune next week? I did change cam/springs/rods and stuff in it and no codes have come up so far but I just wanna be safe. It sounds like its running perfect though
