I think there is a topic on just that same swap.
If I were you Id upgrade to the LS6 Cam if you wanted to stay that mild. You might be dissappointed with the very low gains with the LS1 Cam. The LS6 is also good if you add Forced induction to your vehicle later on.
I just put that cam in my 01 truck last month. Came out of a 2000 vett. 202/210 .500/.500 116. It made a great improvment and didn't have to change springs. Very good idle, better than stock. Pulls really good after 3k to 6k and will work with a stock setup as well. Got 2 more MPG on a 800 mile trip at Xmas.
I know a couple of guys who have done that swap. They got the cams for almost nothing, so they tried it. When I asked them about it, all I got was a big smile, and an anwer of "worth it."
good to hear...i just put the 01 ls1 cam in my 02 5.3...i will have her running this upcoming week:)...check this out http://www.ls1truck.com/forums/racer...l-ls1-cam.html
go bigger
I'm in the process of doing this swap but need to verify with you guys -
Engine: 2002 5.3L from Chevy Avalanche, all stock
Camshaft from a 2000 LS1
You guys mentioned that the stock springs can be used. Any difference in the pushrod length or will it be fine?
This is the type of install i did, And what i found out about LS1 cams is that the lift was 496 in & ex. for 98, 99, 2000 and then was changed to 465 in & 477 ex. in 2001...push rods are the same.
LS series head and cam specs
LS1 Info and Specifications - SMOKEmUP.com
In Mitchell software the cam spec's show lobe lift and on the 2001 is 274 in / 281 ex. when figuring lobe lift x 1.7 rocker ratio it comes up 465 / 477, all the info i have found on 98-2001 stock cams showed a 118-119 LSA, it seems everyone has different spec's..
go bigger if you can but if you plan on goin boost ls6 is the way to go the ls1 cam is not really a big jump imo its not worth the work but some guys love it
I'm selling the stock cam out of my 6.0 if you want something a little bigger. :)
Edit: nevermind, I think it's actually a tad smaller than an LS1 cam?
Depending what year you and he has they may be the exact same cam specs.
As far as the original topic at hand. I take a different approach than most who posted in here. Will you see a difference with a the ls1 vette cam? Yes, I'm sure you will probably see a bit. You can get one for cheap and can still use the stock valve springs.
Here's my gripe:
Doing a cam swap isn't a walk in the park unless you've already done one before. It's not hard, but it's still time consuming. With that said, there's also a fair amount that can go wrong with swapping a cam. When I swapping in my 224/224 cam we did everything right, took our time, and torqued everything to spec. By some weird coincidence my oil pump ended up failing somehow. It turned into a much more time consuming swap and ended up costing me another $200 dollars.
I guess I'm just being the devil's advocate, but you can at least pick up a z06 cam and springs for under $100 if you look around which is about the best factory cam you can buy(especially for FI).
I picked up my used 224/224 cam, valve springs, titanium retainers, and hardened pushrods for $350 to my door.
$100 gets you the cam by itself in most semi-retail situations.
My point exactly.
You have to know where to find them. I've bought and sold about 5 of them just to earn some money. On one forum they might be worth the cost of shipping, and another people will pay $150.
I have paid as little as $45 for one, and my most recent one I plan to actually use for the truck cost me $60 plus shipping
That means you have less than $55 to get springs best case. I'm sure there are good deals out there but you probably have to know a lot of people and do local deals.
