When i'm around 40-50 and slightly accelerating there is a whine from the gears. Is this normal or did I screw up. I put them in Monday and the whine is still there.

If they've been in that long they'll probably always do it. You have something just a little off. Not sure I'd try to correct it but then again....maybe I would.
Well we checked the wear pattern w/ white spray paint and it was dead center. Is alittle whine ok or no?
If its noisy something is wrong. Fix it.
what gears? richmonds?
if whine as stated pull them out and reset the gears up
whine shouldnt happen but have heard of richmonds whining when at spec
+1^^
Richmonds are a lil noisy
i have a little whine from mine...they were setup with very little backlash and also the brand of gears can do that, mine are gm performance gears...kind of annoying around 60 but when am i ever driving 60 :D
My richmonds have a little whine when from slowing down.
yeah I would get them reset. I had to get mine reset 3 different times because they kept making noise. Now they are quiet as heck
mine have a whine about 60-70....really sucks on the hwy...what brand gears u get?
i have mine (USA Gear) and trey's (yukon Gear) both set to spec and mine make noise and his dont, i called USA and they said it was normal for their gears to make a little noise and as long as it doesnt get worse it will be fine
I would reset it. If you hear it over a loud exhaust... its pretty loud. I cant hear mine.
They're Summit brand gears I'm gonna check the BL again.
.08 is very loose. Try for 0.004-0.006. 0.008 can work on used gears. Backlash is only one of many specs that must be right. Pinion depth a pattern are important too. Noises generated under decel or slight accel are usually pinion related. Steady speed noises are usually pattern related.
Hey GasGuzzler sorry for my ignorance but, how do you adjust for whine under accel. Is it the pinion nut?
Thanx for all the replies!
you should have tried to used the stock shim on the pinion. The two bearing side shims are were the play counts... I'm probably way off but thats how mine was. We actually just moved the left shim to right and vice/versa and it was perfect. .006-.012 is what I was told the BL should be. A lot of gears come pre worn from the machinist too. Like Rons machine pre-runs theirs.
Most times the pinion shim can be reused but only if the new crush sleeve is pressed to the spec of pinion gear rotating torque. The side shims can usually be reused too but when the entire differential and new gears are installed, many times adjustments are needed. GM has a special tool that allows one to measure pinion depth and with some math, figure out the proper pinion shim. From there, all one has to due is crush the sleeve to the proper rotating torque, set the diff in with original thickness shims (although GM wants the cast iron "spacer" removed from each side and replaced with appropriate thickness steel shims, and measure pattern. GM actually makes two or three different measuring tools for picking side shim thickness too but it moves with new parts even less than pinion shim thickness. Aftermarket gears usually have the pinion depth required etched into the rear end of the pinion gear.
To make a long story short, you don't actually need to adjust the pinion alone....it needs to have the pattern run and reset....which should include another crush sleeve, possible pinion shim change, and possible side shim change.....or any combination thereof.
mine whine as well from 40-50mph but it's been like that for months.
at first they didnt and now they do. heard that its the brand.
Where is the pinion shim located? I don't remember there being one on the stock pinion unless your talking about the crushsleeve.
On a very worse not I git home tonight and there was rear diff fluid every where I think it's coming from the seal on the front of the pinion so tomorrow i'm rechecking everything!
The pinion shim is between the pinion gear and the rear bearing that must be pressed onto the pinion gear before the gear is installed into the housing.
Is this also called the crush sleeve?
No. The crush sleeve is a band (think large wedding ring LOL) that goes on the pinion right before the FRONT pinion bearing. The pinion shim is very thin (0.020-0.038") and sheet metal.
Oh I see now I went and looked at my old pinion, it looks like all that is there is just part of the gear.
Thanx GasGuzzler could there have been serious damage done by not having this installed?
Say again?
Could there be serious damage done by not having pinion shim installed?
Ummm, yes. Like I said in the very beginning, if the thing is set up to whine, it probably always will unless it was redone right away. No pinion shim? Sounds like you needed a little more help. We can help you get it fixed but there's a good chance you'll have to live with the whine or buy another set of gears.
I think I will just live with the whine.
THANX for all your expertise!!!!
Nooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!
What I meant about living with it was AFTER you get it set up with the proper pinion shim it will most likely still make noise that you'll have to live with unless you replace the gears again.
DO NOT keep diving it if there is no pinion shim!
yeah, thats why its whining. ASAP, you need to pull the pinion and put the shim on it, reset the BL, and recheck the wear pattern. You might have to replace the gears, but its worth a try.
And your welcome
my richmonds dont whine.. but mine do make noise for a split second when I let off the gas going around 60mph, and they make some when I get back on the gas. its not a whine, feels more like a vibration of some sort. I can feel it in the pedal. im going to tear mine apart and check everything out soon.
Got it all fixed Friday morning. Guess I got it soon enough, there was no damage done. Even wear pattern on gears from previous spraypaint was good. Better safe than sorry.
the noise stopped then right?
