03-05 Double DIN dash bzl and a/c cntrls on '02

Got myself an earlier x-mas present of a Pioneer AVIC F700BT Nav/Radio.
It's a double DIN of course.

My '02 dash bezel is only like 1.75 DIN, but after doing some searching
it looks like the '03-'07 bezels are double DIN.

Is this right ?

Another thing I noticed was the '03 bezel hits the '02 a/c controls
in lower corners. Check out install pics I found of someone else Silverado install.

Can you install the '03-'05 a/c controller in my '02.
They look and work quite a bit differently if I remember right, with dual
zones and such.

I think the pictured install above also said he could not use his ash tray anymore.


Help me out guys. I want this bad boy to look clean and "factory" as possible.
No hacking or trimming of the dash bezel.

I plan on doing the same thing sometime this coming summer hopefully. I found this on gmfullsize.

dont forget the bezel hangs down lower. this means you wont be able to use your ashtray or power outlets. now if you did the 03+ console then you wouldnt have an issue. this is why i need the 03+ bezel to fit better with the 03console.

you can mod the bracket the ac knobs mount to to align better. you wont be able to swap controls unless your doing some serious wire work.

I got some info on this a while back, our dash bezels are about 1.5" but the 03 dash bezels will work. I was told you would have to switch out the AC controls, there will be some cutting required if you don't.

After reading that guys thread and making some careful measurements
I think I'm going to try and hack my dash trim up and re-glue it all back
together like he did.

Only thing I dont know, is where to get that trim color in a paint ?
It's like some grayish/blue/black satin color.

Does GM keep a record of the plastic trim color ?

looks good. where did you get that dash kit? i just bought a Pioneer D2 and need to get everything to install it by the time i get back to the UK next week.

I have a 01 with the din and a half bezel that I made into a dbl din with a pioneer avic z2 in in I'll post some pics tonight for you but you also have to take out alot of the plastic supports behind the radio and you will also have to brace the radio because they font make a dash kit for a dbl din

Ok, she is in. Had to cut up the bezel pretty good.
But should be able to reshape it.

Got install kit from Best Buy. Took the side clips off and
then screwed them to the sides of the radio using a small piece
of plywood on each side for spacing.

cant wait to see the finished product!!

Its wired up and everything is working.

Need to figure out where I want to route its USB cable and
I will be able to hook up i-pod or USB flash drive.
Can even watch movies or podcast off an i-pod while driving too.

and of course the more expensive model the 900BT will play DVD's

The GPS antenna is sitting on the metal dash frame just behind the
radio and under the dash. Had read they work fine there and sure
enough it "sees" right thru the plastic dash.

I "hacked" the wire harness per forum instructions so I can access route
controls and watch video with out the "parking brake" applied too. :)

Now for the fun part of reworking the bezel............

Heres my dash i didnt cut near as much out on mine and the bottom of the dash under the radio is still in mine. alls i had to cut out was a little on top and bottom and just fill in the sides with a little abs plastic.

GM does keep record of the interior dash paint. There is actually a code for it. If you need some let me know.

I can't decide if I want to hold off, and do a nice carputer with an audison bit one processor for 3-way or just find an Alpine w505 and H701 processor and be done with it......

Went by the auto paint store and got some 3M plastic repair epoxy.

I glob'd it into the corner wet with small plastic knife.
After about 5mins it sets up to the constancy of old chewing gum stuck
under a desk.

You have about another 10mins to lightly mold it with your finger tips
or end of plastic knife or whatever.

Waiting for it to cure now to see how it bonds and sands.
The cured sample at the store looked and felt just like hard plastic.

This Plastic Repair stuff should work like a charm.

Started by wrapping a small piece of plywood with aluminum foil.
and taping it to the back of the bezel.

Then glob on the plastic repair resin in a nice thick even coat
around the edge.

About 5-10mins later you can start you can start molding a little
by finger tip take out some of the bigger high spots. and after about
15mins you can remove the wood and carefully peal off the foil.

With in 1-2 hours its hard enough to cut with a drimel and start making
rough cut. Stuff sets up as hard and strong as plastic in about an 1hr.

Repeat, sand, shape, repeat, sand shape ...... you get the point.
