Well this weekend I'll be putting the new turbo set-up on my truck and I still can't decide what do about my transmission. My truck has a 5.3/4L60e in it and most people I've talked to said put a shift-kit and vette servos in it. I'll be running about 6psi with the front mount and intercooler, but I've got a feeling I'm going to want a boost controller to run about 10psi. Will the shift kit and servos be enough to handle 10psi or should I just go ahead and get a built trans??
Yours trans will die with 10psi. Your rear end is also going to die if it is stock.

Yeah, that's what I was figuring. I'll probably go with a shift kit, servos, and a trans cooler for now... then upgrade to a built trans, converter, and better posi.
The shift kit and servo pistons are not to add strength as much as shift quality. Yes, the 2-4 servo mod can help save the 2-4 band but it's the hard parts inside (input housing, reverse input drum, planetaries, reaction sunshell, input sprag, output shaft) are what break under power.
Mine looks exactly like that! Wow. Mine took a dive with no where near that much power. It is still N/A. A built tranny is the way to go as soon as you can.Quote:

alot of guys on here use FLT. i hear good things. If I could go back I would have bought theres myself instead of getting mine built.
I would build a monster of my own in a heart beat but I would start with a stock trans for sure....not a "performance" build.
I can do it myself though.

I put the Century Transmission Stg III in my turbo Tahoe project
with a Circle D TB 3,000 stall converter.

Also running the Tru-Cool 40,000 gvw cooler.
This seemed to be the most cost effective upgrades I could
find for my build that should still hold up fine, but not break the
bank like a FLT Lv5 trans would.
I havent thrown any boost at it yet, but should be good to go
with those parts I think.
Next will be a Detriot Locker Tru-trac posi.
If you're gonna wait and build a trans, then at least put a servo in.

I have wasted my 460 3 times already and the last time it was buillt it had the servos,precision t/c with a 2000 stall kevlar band and much more. i don't know what to do anymore, i was thinking of doing a 460-480 swap but i have heard of the 460's holding up.

With that kind of power, the 60e should hold up.
Its the weight that has you at the disadvantage and kills the 60e. Beef up!
i was told it would hold up but i really don't think they are putting the weight factor in it. the 3 piece 22" asanti's wheels are heavy, i also have 3 12'subs and a diablo lambo door kit. those hinges are 50lbs a piece also then the turbo kit upfront was about another 100lbs of weight with piping and intercooler and tranny cooler. i have heard mixed things that it will hold and won't hold. i might just beef up to a 480 and not have any worries about it anymore

Don't forget the L.
Servos do as much or more for feel than for strength. Shift kits are for feel. Torque converters are for acceleration.
Strength parts are input housings, output shafts, input shafts, planetaries, etc.
yea i have had all that done also... i'll have to look up all what has been done. my tranny guy just retired after over 25 yrs in the biz and moved to north carolina. he said the only thing to do after is to go to a bigger trans cause he did all he could do to it.of course i'm not the expert but he did come highly recommended by quite a few people here where i live
Are you launching hard in 4wd mode ? cause that will break a tranny.
