'05 Z-71 crew-cab 5.3 appx 56XXX miles
When I turn the steering wheel (left or right) while moving, there is a knocking noise that I can feel through the steering wheel. Sometimes it is louder than others and on bumpy roads it gets bad. Is this a bad tie-rod, ball-joint or somethign else. I admit that I don't know jack mechanically so I don't want to get bent over when I eventually take this in for repair. Thanks in advance for the replies
It's the intermediate steering shaft. You can have them regrease it, but the noise will eventually come back. Gm is supposed to have a revised shaft for this.
I replaced mine with a Borgeson intermediate shaft.
Any cost to regrease? Better to replace?
the grease pack only costs about $10, then about half hour labor.
I'm not sure want the new Gm shaft cost.
The Borgeson shaft is over $200.
yeh its the intermediate shaft,mine did it about 6 months after buying it new.
Thanks alot. If it's DIY is there a tutorial or anything else I can use to get it done myself? If not, I'll prolly have it done by a mech.

If you do this yourself, make sure you strap the steering wheel down so that it does not turn, or you will ruin the clock spring in the column!

Well, I called around to the three local stealerships and found that the truck kit was no longer available. I did a little more reading last night and found that I basically have three options:
1- Get a new ISS and put it in myself w/ the help of a mech friend.
2- Get some good high temp gun grease or wheel bearing grease and lube it myself.
3- Drill and screw in a 1/4" grease nipple and fill it as needed.
I'd probably get a new ISS if I knew that if it failed they'd replace it at no charge. I'd appreciate more guidance on this.
drill a 1/8" hole and use a needle type grease gun fitting to fill it from the top. Use moly grease. The bad thing is it will not collapse in a front end accident if you fill it with grease.
Got my ISS from GMpartsdirect.com; much cheaper than the dealer.
I pulled the bolt,worked it in and out three times to move the grease around and it lasted another 50k miles before i had to do it again.....just my two cents.....but i really dont have any!
A big +1 for my original dealer Freedom Chevrolet in Virden, IL. I called them and they are going to replace it free of charge on Friday. I am 20k past warranty so this was a surprise, but the 40 minute drive will be worth it. I'm going get the old ISS back and drill in a grease nipple for likely later use.

The new shaft is about $95 retail. After having problems with this since 1999, I can say that this will fix it. I have yet to see a new style shaft (looks exactly like original) get replaced for a repeat complaint since its release in November 2006. If it's a 2004+, make sure there is no slop in the plastic lower column bearing where the shaft comes out of the column....the newer trucks have common problems here as well. The grease kit is not available for the trucks any longer because the shaft was updated so long ago.
