I would say it really depends on how you intend to use it. I was told 5 psi would be fine for a long time on my stock tranny and rear end. I'm planning on running 10 so I'm upgrading the tranny to an FLT lvl 5. If you dont plan on any hard launches or racing, you would probably be fine with stock...Also depends on what tranny and rear you have now...
Then I agree with the above. Worry about fixing it when it blows.

depends on what you call beefing it up. Converter alone can cost you $1000 + installation. Tear down to improve durability can cost another $1500 for R&R and parts depending where you take it. Rear end is easily another $1000 worth of parts and labor if you do limited slip/posi and gears. A tune to just get you started is up to the tuner.
I would keep it til it blows. In the meantime, start a trans fund. You'll need it.
