changing transmission solenoid

wow you would think this would be easy but i never took a trans pan off before. kasploosh LOL now i got to scrub the cement in my apt to try to get all the trans fluid off. :ugh2: i put cardboard down and an oil change pan but it was a huge amount of fluid, and i missed the pan with most of it.

then the one bolt that is holding the solenoid, (torx head) stripped out :hyper2:
i spent all day trying to get that thing out going back and forth to the autoparts store lol. ended up just grinding a slot in it with my dremel and got it out with a flat screwdriver w/ cresent wrench on it.

man you have no idea how victorious i felt when i finally got it to budge.:whack:

lmao... yeah transmissions are a pain in the ass... when i swapped an auto in place of the 5 speed the first thing i did was drill a hole in the pan and weld in a nut to put a drain plug in so that i dont take a transmission bath... glad you got it taken care of now you will know what to expect the next time... :)

BWAH-hahahahaha!!! Sorry Illya, but I had to. Yeah, dropping the pan is an art...you need to take your time and care not to get that tranny fluid everywhere. You'd think GM would have put a drain plug on that damn thing. Jeff has done what most people do to make their own plug. Its real easy to do--but the pan is aluminum and you need to find someone that can do that. Or just buy an aftermarket pan with a drain plug...

how'd you get an aluminum pan? Mine stock pan is steel. I use a big storage tote under transmissions that don't have a drain plug, it catches all the fluid. :thumb:

I thought they were all aluminum? Mine is. I've tried sticking a magnet to the outside of my pan and it doesn't stick... The guy who owned the truck before me must have done some tranny and rearend work for towing. He put in 4.10s, maybe a shift kit, and trailer brakes. Its weird... But now that I think about it--they do have to be steel because whenever I have done a shift kit or helped change trannys on other people's trucks, the donut magnet inside the pan has to stick to something... DER DER DER!!!!

yeah mine is thin steel, im having a problem finding a solenoid that is the same. the one i ordered from oreillys wasnt exactly the same. the electrical connectors were tabs instead of a plug. im not sure if its something they changed and i have to put a different end on or what.

Which soleniod? EPC? A shifting soleniod? If you had to use a torx bit on it, it sounds like an EPC... Maybe???? IDK...

Well we didn't want to take our chances replacing solenoids from GM, Oreillys, and Autozone. So we chose to go with all GM replacement parts. We replaced the small sensor and the switch for the transmission plus a gasket kit. Not to mention the entire engine and all the relays and parts that attach to it. The last and only part we haven't replaced is the *transmission* . So we are back to replacing all the solenoids. Eighty dollars of transmission fluid later, we are still working on this truck. So now all my :tacos: money is gone, and my :ma: wants to know if I'm still traveling across America to see her in Ohio. We are still stuck in WA til this truck runs immaculate. :hyper2: We dropped the pan no problem, he stripped one of the solenoid screws *crying*, and almost stripped one of the transmission pan bolts. Then he sent me away to make hot cocoa because I made him nervous while I was staring at him...lol Now when I turn the key...It better work or I'm going to lose my mind~! Or give up...one.
