Great idea but I'd do a 6.0 instead for the added torque. With the price of gas these days, it would pay for itself in a hurry.
How Are The 6.0's On Gas Though?
You should get 14-16MPG in that pig.
Alot Better,i Wonder How Easy They Are To Find ,i Need To Start Looking,i Wonder How Many Extras Ill Need To Get Together To Do The Swap?
I Get 7 Now 4 If I Use The A/c With My 4:10 Gears
I Would Do Away With The Coils And Do A Distributor Kit They Have For The Camaro Ls1's In The Gm Performance Book
Ouch!
Buy a complete pullout with everything they'll give you. Harness, accessories, hoses, belts, PCM, flywheel, air cleaner assembly, exhaust and flanges minimum, starter...anything already bolted to the engine.
Then you'll need the harness converted, PCM setup with a hotrod tune, motor mount adapters, electric fans(optional), electric fuel pump(if the V8 isn't injected and can't push 60 PSI of pressure)...
Check out the OBS to LS1 conversion topic to see an overview of things you'll need to do during the conversion.
If It Will Work ,convenience Of Not Having All Those Coils,a Distributor In The Front And A Carb, less Wiring Issues, but Ide Have To See If The Plate Would Fit The Front Of A 6.0
The Ls1 Front Cover Is The Same Part Number
yep, 99% of all parts are interchangable with 4.8, 5.3, 6.0, 5.7 engines.
There Would Be Alot Of Pain Gone Not Having To Use The Coils And Fi Stuff
Are you somewhere that you don't have to do smog inspections?
Florida
Do they not do any emissions testing in your area?
gregs def. right about the 6.0 if you put a 5.3 in that big bizatch your gas mileage isnt gonna be alot better, plus it would be gutless in that tank go with the 6.0.
Thanks,now For The Hunt
If your looking to convert a LS engine to carb...I like this approach, I likethe idea of the msd ignition and retaining the coil on plug, gives it a clean look too, IMO...deduct the cost of the intake and your not far from the distributor conversion kit...

If you want an insane efi crate engine...then I like this approach...:)

How Is That Msd Setup To Install, wiring Wise? Anyone?
Only a couple connections, it gives you a couple preset timing curves to play with.Quote:

Im guessing your going the junkyard route for the engine, make sure you get the coils, they aint cheap, without them, the distributor conversion would make more economical sense.
Probably need to ask questions about your transmission, going to carb, your gonna want a controller or determine if the stock ecm can handle this without the engine efi functional
You may realize its worth the hastle to just transplant the stock LS efi harness and reprogram the computer.
Either way you go, its pretty straight forward, just time consuming and alotta little things to work out. Glad its you and not me. :)
Are you sure you cant find a 454 wizard somewhere that cant help you tweak the snot out of it to get it to perform a little better mpg wise.
Funny You Mention The 454 Wizard,i Talked To A Guy Who Told Me A List Of Things To Do,im Gonna Try That Route Adn Maybe Do A Ls Conversion In A Chevelle,i Cant Find Any Shorty Headers, they Show Some For A Ss454 But I Wonder What The Difference Would Be?hedman Says They Wont Woek, but I Think Why Not,the Manifold Part Number Is The Same.
Hooker makes LSx conversion headers for the Chevelle if I'm not mistaken.
Sorry, I Meant Headers For My 7.4 In My Burb
long tube headers are usually more ideal for low end torque/ trucks.
summit racing has a set of hooker long tubes.
thorley tri Y are available as well (think these may very well be a direct replacement, not certain, I just glanced), not a long tube per sae but the tri Y design is a little different than equal length tubes.
I like the LSX engines just as much as anyone else but you got a 454 in your truck, it might be an underpowered turd stock but there is alotta potential there, your only limited to what you can afford.
Find a cheap beater to get mpg, bring out the 3/4 ton monster when its time to play. :)
Ill Look Into Those Hookers, thank You
