ive been thinkin of swapin in vortec 350(l31) in to 05 silverado anyone done this swap? i heard it was pretty straight forward and didnt require a different wiring harness. i know the 6.0 would be alot better but i could pick up l31 for alot less and put a few goodies on it for less than the 6.0
?? ive heard that it is the easiest swap for the nbs. i know that gm still uses the l31 in mexico. not worried bout steppin back in time the 4.3 has been the same for a long time.
i would love to use 6.0 but they are way over priced where i live and hard to find. two grand for a motor with no wiring harness or accesories.
where do u live? i paid $1700 for mine with wiring harness and all accessories with 60k miles on it... the only 5.7's id consider are the ls1 and ls6. ur not even talking about a lt1 here, the 4.3 would be just as powerful with a lil effort if u just want a small upgrade cam the 4.3 or turbo it...
i already have a custom tune and open exhaust and no cats. i dont think the 4.3 can ever give me the power i want for a resonable price.
Here is my 2 cents... instead of swapping in the old L31, save up money and wait until you have enough to buy a newer motor... Not to mention it will never pass emissions. Law says you cant have a Motor that is older than the vehicle installed in place of its existing Motor unless it came from the factory like that. Then it would need to pass the smog sniffer. wich it never will if its modded. The only way I would ever put a LT1 or older L31 in a newer vehicle is if it was specifically a race vehicle and never saw the street. And the motor I would put in would be completley race prepped for lots of spray or lots of boost.
i just did a 4.3 to 6.0 swap.
i have seen some nasty 4.3's
they are strong motors stock. i would go with a lsx motor, they are about the same price as a vortec 5.7
keep looking you can get them anywhere from 500-2k depends on the mileage and who is selling it.
the reason i was thinkin the l31 is because i can pick one up for 350-500 and could do a 383 and cam for about the the same or less than a 6.0. im gonna keep lookin for a 6.0 for now may even consider a 5.3 since they are probally more of them available.

yea im gonna call the local junk yards tommorow and see what they want for a 5.3. and on another note i tore the rear end out of my truck yesterday i think its the ring and pinion what would be a good ratio for 33-35's i have a 5spd and 33's and 5spd now. but will prolly do a v8 swap in a couple weeks. im thinkin 4.56 or 4.88
Find a cheap 5.3L and do a 383 kit. More cubes than a 6.0L and on a budget.

Definately shop around and find a used LSx motor... I've found all the parts mentioned in my sig (basically the full engine) for under $600. Gotta love LSx towns (TSP is down the road)! :)
well, i found a 5.3 today for 750 with the wiring harness. i think im gonna go pick it up monday.
how will the wiring hook up to my truck having a 5spd. and the donor engine being a automatic.

I've done a couple LS1 to OBS truck conversions. I like them. :thumb: Where are you located? Some states won't allow an older engine in a newer vehicle. You'd have to install a 05+ PCM to control the LS1 engine and that would be a royal pain.
im in tn emissions are not a concern. i can get a wrecked 99 z28 with motor and tranny for 1500. or a 5.3 already pulled with harness for 750. witch would be the best? simplest?
Depends on the look you want. The LS1 is best for power and weight. The 5.3 is a stout setup and you can use all stock parts in your truck. Personally, I think I'd do the 5.3 just because of the simplicity of the swap and all the accessories are made to fit the truck best.

damn, im glad u guys talked him out of swapping for an older motor....that would not have been too smart like everyone already said.

ok im wondering about the plugs on the new wiring harness tho not the engine bolting to the trans

Wait... I got confused by your name Thrasher88... I thought you were swapping a v8 into an 88. If I were you, And I planed on having a powerful engine, I would get at least a built 4l60e or 4l65e if not a 4l80e. yeah its auto, but these transmission shift quick, hard, and are consistent at the track. and the ls1 or the 5.3 would bolt right up and if you find a complete engine with harness. your swap would be easy. FLT can hook ya up with a kick ass trans... Duckysbht has the 4l65e and I rode in his truck and it kicks ass even more so with 7psi of boost.

If the harness is out of an 03-06, you will not need a custom harness, but you will need to have your computer flashed for the V8. And to have the auto transmission programming removed.
You might think you could just use the computer that came with this motor, but that will not work because of the theft deterrent system. The vehicle vin number is programmed into the Body Control Module and must match the PCM. So it's easier to just have your computer flashed with these changes.
Just be sure to tape up the end of the cable with the autotrans connector on it and tie it up out of the way.
A 99-02 harness will not work because of pin out differences in the computer connectors---so not recommended.
