What are some of the pros and cons between the KN and the Volant?
When someone asks you what kind of intake you have, it's quicker to type "K&N".
I like my k&n but Im sure that even if you have the best intake in the world... it wont be but maybe 1hp more than any of the others. unless its a dry cone filter from Vatozone... those give you like 20whp over the others... and they have LED mufflers to help speed up the exaust. A pluss side to having a Metal tube intake is you can tap it and put a nitrous nozzle in pretty quickly.
Ok...anyway--both are pretty equal when it comes to performance. THe K&N offer an exposed conical filter where Volant has a conical filter retained in a box that pulls air from the passenger side fender (like stock) and from a hole in the bottom of the Volant box. Volant also offers their VaraRam system that allows you to hook up a ram air style tube that runs from the bottom hole of the filter box to the opening for the tow hooks on your lower valence... The K&N doesn't offer that.
but does it really make a difference on the dyno?
I got volant and i like it....i just like the fact that is a closed unit and the ram air is pretty cool.
any type of ram are really doesn't make a difference on a dyno when your truck is standing still. The theory behind ram air is as you are driving air inters the tube then into your intake. So if you are going for a dyno queen then ram air would not do any good for you, but in theory it will work on the track/ street
as far as these go they flow a little better than stock, they sound louder becasue you are taking out the noise dampner in the stock intake tube(so you think you gained power)....if your looking for power the main choke points will be the stock TB and Intake manifold...but hey if you want it buy...
im going with an AEM cuz im getting it cheap and its a large intake. if i wasnt getting a GREAT deal on it id definitely go with Volant. K&N sometimes has issues with oil getting through onto the MAF sensor, because it is a lubricated cone not a dry filter like most of the rest... with that said k&n is a great company that a lot of people use. the metal tubes are not recommended as IAT's will be a little higher than a plastic intake tube will.
I did away with the box on the volant and put a k&n filter on it. What I like about it is you can trim your shroud with the volant and use a 1' throttle body spacer can't do that with the k&n. Loved the whistle when i had it.
Too bad thats all the Throttle body spacer is good for... Unless you tap it and install a nitrous nozzle, they are worthless. Except for the whistle.
yeah thats basically what i was getting at. not much good for anything other than that
I like my whistling nitrous plate LOL
I put my nitrous plate on and dropped one full tenth in the eighth without even hooking the juice up. I don't understand how, I'm not one to argue with results. :thumb: Maybe it was the weather, who knows? :nutz:
Weird Greg...maybe you were holding you mouth differently that pass...
I have a volant intake and exhaust on my truck and while they both perform well the fitment was crappy and the customer service from Volant was even worse.
