you are the man Quik.
im thinking about doing this just for a back up motor.
i was just trying to have a spare motor. and be cheap about it.
heck you want me to spend a bunch of money now.
lol
6.125 rods arent going to be cheap are they??
I have read where you take the 5.3 and just bore it 3mm to make 5.7L, so just buy a used 5.3L and bore it.
Read here in teh GEN III info to the right
Welcome to S&P LS Casting Numbers
really? 5.3 and just bore it huh. well i have a stock 5.3 as well. so i just might do that.
well thats not to bad.
i was hoping i could use a stock rod. lol
just want this as a cheap back up motor. lol
maybe i should just rebuild the 5.3 or the 4.8L back to stock.
nah that wont be no fun. lol
Yes, you can make a 5.3 a 5.7 just by boring it to 3.9. The stroke is the same in the 5.3,5.7,6.0; 3.62".
I have the Eagle rods cheaper than $450; $400 shipped.
yeah i guess i could do a stock rebuild. but i think ill go with your first suggestion.
found the rods for 385.00 at TRT
ive got a stock 6.0l crank sitting int he garage. so ive got my christmas list worked out. lol thanks guys.
Not to mention the fact that the 370 will live longer and rev higher than a 408.
to be honest, thats pretty much just the advice ive needed all day...its not often the cheaper choice is the better choice..i know my wife would appreciate this decision..if i was to ever tell her :thumb:
Thanks guys
Hell, just do a 347. You can still make "Hella" power with one. I have seen people make 800 +rwhp with boost.
That way, you can start with a cheap 5.3 iron block.
Yeah, but a 408 chews the piston skirts up from the first time you crank the engine. The cast iron block has cylinders too short for a dependable long life with a longer than stock stroke. If you precision balance both engines the 370 will run sustained high RPMs much longer than the 408 ever will.
When the cylinders are as short as they are in the 6.0L the pistons tend to rock in the cylinder at the bottom of the stroke and the bottom edge of the cylinder cuts the skirt. I have some wonderful pictures of the damage a 4" stroker does to a 408" engine. Yeah, I know a 4" stroke works on some engines but it doesnt work on all engines. A 4" stroke is great in an aluminum block GenIII but the cylinders are longer and the pistons stay stable at the bottom of the stroke.

OK, so now ive got another question.
i found a great deal on a set of stock size ls1 rods and pistons and crank. can i put those in my 4.8/ 5.3 L block?? and just bore the block 30 over???
I'm right now working on a 5.3 to 5.7, and found good price in a mahle kit
eBay Motors: H-BEAM RODS MAHLE PISTONS SBC SB CHEVY 6.1 LS1 LS6 RP$ (item 260126062683 end time Dec-02-07 21:56:50 PST)
The Pistons R ceramic coated and with graftal on the skirts, the rods R preatty nice, eagle I think.
I ordered the lowest CR cause I'm on Turbo, so CR would be around 8.8-9.0
so can i use stock 6.098 rod length to make a 5.3 block into a 5.7L
with the stock ls1 pistons size. and a ls1 crank
Or you can bore it 3mm and buy a set of pistons and have a 5.7L
ok ls1 is a 3.89399mm bore rod is a 6.098 stroke is a 3.633
so i take the 4.8l / 5.3l block and i bore it 3mm. to make it a 99mm block, and then trash the 3.267 crank and thro in the ls1 crank. then just use the ls1 rods of 6.098
i thank thats right.
