So here I am in Ohio, snow, ice, etc, and what happens other than my windsheild wipers decide to stop working. Before this the intermitent (sp?) part of the switch had stopped working but when put to low or high they would still go. I was wondering how hard it is to replace the wiper switch stalk or any other ideas as to what would be causing the problem would be greatly appreciated.

the switch is not too hard to replace if u have done it before, BUT, if not then it can be a bitch. taking apart the whole column is sometimes neccesary.
p.s. where in ohio are u located? i am in lime going to college.
I am in Canton, OH for my co-op so im just at an apartment so thats what makes this kind of hard as well.
Does the wiper motor have a printed circuit board in it? Those are famous for failing due to a cold solder joint. The board is repairable, or can be obtained from the dealer. One bolt and it pops out of the motor. The cold solder joint is easy to spot.

Does the motor have to be removed for the board to be taken off or examined?
If this is the setup that I think it it, then no. There should be a rectangular plastic cover on the motor that is removed with one bolt. After removing it, the board simply pulls out.

try this, when it isn't working, keep it on low and then put the hood. Smack the box that bandit is talking about. If they go, then you know it is the board. It may still be the board if it doesn't work. I would check this for, there has been a "recall" on this too. You may want to call your dealer with your VIN and ask about it. My 95 had this problem.

There was a recall on a bad control module in your wiper motor, I had one go out also and I thought it was a wiper motor untill I got educated about the problems with the circuit board in this generation of trucks. I got mine at Auto Zone
Think I will try the circuit board idea, but I am going to try and check to see if the plug going to motor is getting power. Who would have thought huh, actual diagnostics.
update...i have a dimular situation with my 94 gmc sierra :nutz:
Firestorm, take the cover off of the wiper module and resolder all the connections. All you have to do is get the solder hot enough to get it to puddle. It's best to do it off the truck. What happens is the cold solder joints vibrate enough that the connections crack and no longer function correctly. I have fixed 3 or 4 just by resoldering the connections. You'll need a good solder gun for the large areas. A solder pencil is too light to get it hot enough to melt the solder.
Cool....I took it off while my interior was drying from the fresh paint I applied. Fairly easy and straight forward. I took the circut board out of the truck and inspected it. All the solders look decent and none of the caps appeared to be leaking like some of the ECU's I've seen for DSM cars. However, on one side of the circuit board it appeared like someone had poured red kool-aid all over the panel. I cleaned some of it up with a shop towel. Also there was a blue box looking thing attatched to the circut board that was saturated in the red stuff too.Quote:

I reassembled the unit and the wipers still didnt work...all it would do is make the humming sound. I pushed on the small black box attatched to the wiper motor assembly and miraculously my wipers started working again. As soon as I let off of it (not applying pressure) the wipers would stop working.
So we got it narrowed down to it primarily being that small black box attatched to the motor assembly...now I just need to find a way to keepa good connection between the two. I will resolder the unit as prevenative maint. Thanks :rock:
Yeah, that is what mine did before I resoldered the connections. I could wiggle the harness connector and viola! the thing would work a few seconds. After the solder job it worked flawlessly for two years for me and probably is still working great where ever the thieving bastages took my truck. :bash:
got her fixed...had to order a n ew module off ebay..some tnautosales or somehting like that. just got her working in time for the hurricane :jump:
