is this a question of some type or an update?
I hope you mean 8 volts. If your alternator only puts out 14 amps you're in serious trouble. Yeah, there is a severe power surge when the fans both kick on. If one then the other kick on it won't be an issue.
yes i did mean volts what would cause it to drop so low
Serious amperage requirements to start the fans spinning from a dead stop times two motors. It's just simple electronics. There's a heavy power drain when they first start up. It recovers after their spinning so no foul. If you could delay the second fan from starting about 10 seconds after the first fan then the power drain wouldn't be so bad.
would a capacitor help? do they have them on already?
You could actually use a capacitor on the small power wire on the relay to delay when the relay triggers. I used to know that electronics junk 25 years ago but have forgotten how to calculate the capacitor size you'd need to delay the voltage for a given amount of time.
thank for the help
Just buy a larger alternator.
how are these fans wired? direct, relays, switches?
airdeano
If your getting that bad of a draw when the fans kick on you probably have a weak battery. I'm not saying it's bad but just week. I'm running underdrives on mine and even at normal driving RPM I only get about 13 volts max of charge. It's normally about 12.5 volts or so and I know exactly what your talking about when the fans kick on. I've seen the load it pulls, both my fans kick on together, but I've never dropped below 12 volts. Get a stronger battery! Anything less than 12 volts is a brown out condition and could cause damage to other electronics.
There is a reason GM installed 145A alts with the trucks with factory efans.
Install a 145A unit, OVERdrive alt pulley, problem solved.
