new cam, broken valve spring

last weekend i finaly put in my new cam, comp 224/224 581. lift, comp valve springs and push rods and a nelson tune, everything went to get great i drove it for 3 days then i got a harable noise, i took off the valve cover to find a broken spring, a broken rocker ( needle bearings everywhere ) and probly a bent valve sence its still in the head. any ideas what would cause the rocker to come apart and the spring to break at the same time? i was told the pushrods where the correct length but they seemed lighty larger then the stock ones.

needle bearings coming out the rockers is not uncommon. Many times some of the bearings come out and you dont even notice until you change the oil and you have them on your plug. It may have been the spring first. I would put a spring, push rod, and rocker on and go from there.

I've heard of a few Comp springs failing. It happens from time to time to even the most expensive of spring sets. Stock rocker arm needle bearings fail all of the time. The arms are less than $10 each per assembly, you're not going to get the best quality roller rockers for that price per unit. Hopefully your valve isn't bent because it didn't fully retract to the seat when the piston came up after the valve spring failed. :sad:

were you baggin on it before engine temps were up? stock springs?

I am with bgray. You really shouldn&#39;t rap up the motor above 2500-2750 rpms until after the motor temp has leveled out. Those high performance springs are quite stiffer than stock and therefore are more brittle at colder temps. I recommend to ANYONE who has new springs, pushrods, rockers, etc.: DO NOT push your motor hard until it has had a proper warm up&#33;

the cam valve springs and pushrods were all brand new, i just getting on the highway when it happened, i have a 2800 stall but going easy so i didnt push above 3grand the hole time, i was just leaving work, the truck was warmed up when i left, the pushrods were 7.4s i woulda thought they were alilttle too long but i was told they were correct, i was thinking about upgrading to some harlem sharp or crane rockers, im just hopeing the head isnt crack or a whole in the piston

a friend of ours ss that we worked on has roken 2 pairs of springs already and according to comp cams their is nothing wrong wit the springs but texas speed said they have gotten allot of broken srings and were changing them

I have a 03&#39; 5.3 and had HPE install there C-cam comp springs and rods, 3 days later i heard it start knocking loud i took it back and they said the spring broke they pulled it apart and the piston was cracked

Thats crappy...I ordered my cam, pushrods, and springs from TS....I guess I will have to keep my ears open so I don&#39;t crack a piston...



BTW, how loud is the knocking? My valvetrain clatter is louder than stock...but is it a definite CLICKITY-CLACK from the normal???

you definately know somethings wrong, it started sounding like something cought in the e-fans and got really loud from there. took about 5 seconds for it all to happen.

thats what i thought too, somthing in the shrowd hitting the fan, then it just sounded like metal, i got the supercharger off heads will be off tomorrow i got my fingers crossed the low end is ok

I&#39;ve seen 5 trucks with the .581 lift cam and a broken valve spring on all of the. Some were Manley including my own and the others were comp 918&#39;s. A friend of mine in the navy called me a couple of weeks ago and said he was having engine problems in his WS6 and it wouldn&#39;t idle. I told him to feel the intake manifold to see if one of the runners were hot and sure enough one was. He pulled the head the other day and it had a broken 918 spring and the valve beat into the piston 1/16" deep. We ordered a set of Patrioot heads with dual gold springs to help take care of his problem. I&#39;d put a set of Golds in your truck if you can and get away from the 918&#39;s and the Manley&#39;s. My golds are a little noisier but I&#39;m hoping to get 30,000 miles out of them at a minimum. JMO

HPE is building a forged 347 for it so hopefully it want happen again. should i get away from the comps or will they hold up.

Whats the lift on your cam and how old are the springs?

Wow guys, I feel like I am walking on broken glass now...I have a Comp 220/220 .581/.581 114 +4 LSA cam with 918&#39;s...And all of this good news is starting to freak me out... When have the broken springs happened? After a certain mileage? After dogging the crap out of it? Just wondering cause whenever I do drive my truck, my foot is ALWAYS stuck in it... :smile:

the cam is 232/234 112 lsa .595/.598 and the springs were 3 days old. its a big cam for the truck, but they told me it was streetable, so i went with it.

I know what Comp and Manley say but there&#39;s too much proof out there on what&#39;s happening. If you don&#39;t take the time to let your engine warm up before a high rev, spend the money on a good set of springs. Actually it&#39;s a cheap investment.............................

what other springs are out there to choose from, as far as being better. when it happened, the truck had been running for about an hour so it was warmed up. and i was cruisin, not even on it. HPE is building the motor now so i can switch em&#39; out for nothing.and does anyone know anything about the 347, as far as performance.

Patriot Performance gets some of the best springs. Billy at TRTTurbo can get you some for a great price. The PP springs shed the least amount of brittle materials compared to most other company&#39;s springs.

I got my head off, the head looks fine the valve is very bent, and good size nic in the piston, im gona clean it up with a cookie and make sure its not cracked but it should be runable, does anybody know if i can run bigger valves in the stock lq9 heads? i figured if there off i sould do new valves and guides, and lifters
