I have a series of questions about thermostats
What do the stock ones read?
How much is a 180 thermostat?
Will that 180 help my truck perform a little better?
im 16 so the more info you give me the better, because im learning!!

stock therm i think runs at 200 degrees or so. usually on a high performance motor you want to run a lower temp therm to help cooling conditions since the motor is running harder. most people will pair up a low stat with a e-fan and gain some extra hp and a few degrees lower on there temp gauge the stat might help just a little but nothing noticable its good to have if you plan on running your truck hard that way the motor can cool off faster.
why not get a 160* T-stat??

but who makes em i heard that hypertech does but i could only find it for the 99-02
I think a British firm called Murray actually makes them for most everybody in the aftermarket. They are sold through Orielly and Autozone, also.

This is the t-stat that I intalled in my truck

my bad i must of missed that
I picked up a 160* for my '04, went from running a bit above 200 to 183.
to my knowledge the 160* is not as highly recommended as the 180* but im not sure on why. seems like someone said ur optimum op temp needs to be a certain temp and the 160* t-stat drops the temp too far. could be speaking out of my ass tho so dont hold me to it.
i put a 180 in my truck and saw hardly no change in temp, if your gonna change it put a 160 in, dont waste your money like i did on the 180
an ACTUAL drop to 160* stat temp would not be great for our applications...seeing how the L motors run a bit hotter and engineered to in nature
My 160* stat with my efans sits around 180-185..which is an optimun level...i gaurantee the 160 wont sit at 160...at least i have never heard of one actually doing so.
What other mods do you have?? A Thermo is one of the last things I did and I have an extensive list..
Heres a link to a write up I did, and heres the stat i used.

My Jet came with a nice new housing

You guys realize that a thermostat simply OPENS at the temperature specified and that it's not supposed to stay at that temperature, correct? Getting a 160° thermostat doesn't mean it's supposed to make your vehicle run at that temperature.
i understand what it does, but im simply saying that i have read that the 160* tstat isnt recommended by some. now in waco texas where the temp will reach 105-110* outside some days im sure its a lil different story. im no expert on this stuff so any input is helpful.
I was replying more to some of the others....

With the 160°, it opens 20° sooner, so normally the engine won't run as hot as normal.Quote:

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Z71sierra7787 @ May 30 2007, 12:27 PM) </div>I second that. I did not make the mistake of putting in the 180--but since my 160 has been in, is running just a little bit cooler...only because it opens a lot earlier than before. A 160 will not operate at 160. It might wayyyy up north in the dead of winter, but a 160 should run 15-20 degrees cooler than a stock t-stat.Quote:

If you want to make the 160 degree stat work to it's full potential and you have electric fans you must have the fans reprogrammed to come on earlier.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(RedHeartbeat @ Jun 4 2007, 01:44 PM) </div>That is what I have done with mine, but it still hovers around 170-180...Quote:

same here - I don't think much cooler would be that good for it from what I've read
I've heard they run best hot with a cold air induction. It's just a Gen III thing. I don't know if the PCM turns the tune down when cold and running fat vs. at what the engineers call operating temp. You know they programmed the PCM to run for emissions and not all out performance.
yah mine are reprogrammed also
yeah thanks i know the stock thermo is 187 and how it works and the 180 wouldnt see much difference which i why i told him not to get it if he wanted to see a changeQuote:

If your truck is an 06 It should already have e-fans I know mine has them, but I have also heard that the 160 isnt that good and that the 180 is better.
damn i just installed the 180 stat this afternoon. well that was a waste.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(silverado06 @ Jun 14 2007, 11:48 AM) </div>Even with the 160 t-stat and e-fans, my truck is runs 190* when at idle (warm) and about 180" when on the hwy... Its just a preference thing. Red is right, the GenIII is designed to run a little hotter than previous Gen. motors...Quote:
